Well if all goes well I will be on the NSP Wednesday morning around 5am or a little before. Say hello if you there. White Ford 4 door F150 with Navy plate. I'll put my Pier Rat decal in the window too if I can remember. I got lots of sabikis and a couple of good poles so come on macks. In 11 years of fishing out there I have never gone home with my limit of macks. Still don't have a keeper grouper either so there's always something to look forward too. I'll make a report Wednesday evening if I can stay awake. riverviewsteve

Well for what it's worth here it is. Got to the NSP around 4:45am. A few people there already. Scooter told me earlier in the evening they had a pretty good mack run. I had 3 silver trout big enough to keep by 8am but no macks. I did see some caught around me and some were really nice size. Everytime I seen one caught I would try whatever they were using. One guy was catching some on a silly willy and having pretty good luck. Just as I was getting ready leave a couple of guys next to me right in front of the bait shop were catching some nice ones. I was standing less than 15 ft away using the same rig and I never got a mack. Can't figured it out. Wonder if it's my cologne or something. But wait! I didn't put any on. Oh well. I'm going out Monday morning for another shot at it. I did catch a 3" black sea bass, a couple of greenbacks, 1 or 2 pins and a very large catfish. Must have been around 5 pounds and pretty blue color. I did catch more silvers though. I threw back a lot but went home with six pretty decent ones. The wife was happy. She likes them better than macks anyway. Beautiful day on the pier. Really enjoyed being out there anyway. riverviewsteve

Thanks for the report Steve. I think my wife and I are going to try it again Friday morning. My best luck with the macks has been using a rig I bought at Holy Mackerel tackle on 49th street in Pinellas Park. I think it is actually made by sabiki but has four short tubes, 2 silver and 2 gold, with matching mylar. I caught as many as 3 at a time and they didn't tear it up like the did the other small sabikis we were using. We just jigged them using different speeds to see what worked best.
What were you using to catch the silvers and did you fish on the bottom for them?
I've heard several mention the pier rat decals but don't have one though I fish often at the skyway. Are those available at the pier house?
blessings, David

Hey Steve - good call on the fishing , and keeping momma happy !!
At 4:45 Am - you caught about the last 2 1/2 hour of falling tide ( on 3/2/11 7:22 AM LT). At 8 AM the tide had just gone from slack to incomming.
You are a smart man -... " because if momma isn't happy ,... ain't nobody happy ! "

David the decals were avertised by someone on line. I'm not postive if it was this forum or the old skyway forum. I've forgotten his name I'm sorry. Maybe he'll see this. I caught all the trout on sabiki's. I put little strips of squid on a couple of times but most were caught on bare sabiki's. I favor the Hayabusa size 14. They seem to hold up better. With the macks it's the heavier the better. I've got some all the way up to size 20 now. Pretty heavy line too. Haven't caught much with it yet but I'm going out again Monday around 4:30 am or so if the weather cooperates. Looks pretty good so far don't know about the wind yet. David the rig you mentioned I beleive is called a mackerel rig. I have one too just like you described. Mine is a 1/0 southbend with 4 tubes. I didn't catch anything with it Wed but I'm going to try again Monday I hope.
Dadflyer I actually didn't leave till close to 3pm. I hadn't planned on staying so long but people around me started catching macks pretty steady so I hung around. I was waiting on the fish cleaning station to get free to. I live in an apartment so it's not real convenient to clean them at home. Wife isn't real fond of me cleaning them in the sink. Actually it wasn't all that windy out there. It was when I first got there but it slowed down pretty good. In the afternoon it started to pick up again. Hope you make it sometime. I usually go a couple of days a month. Never on a weekend. Just don't like fighting the crowds. Course being retired I can pick my days. Tight Lines, Full Coolers and remember. The worst day fishing beats the best day of working. If nothing else I just love being there when the sun comes up or goes down. That bridge is beautiful on any occasion. (My opinion) Everyone has one of those I reckon. riverviewsteve USN, Retired and loving it.

Steve, thanks for the info. We'll have to link up to fish together sometime soon, perhaps even join you if you go out Monday. I have to help get the step daughters to school at 6:30 am but after that I'm free most days....unless there are "honey do's"...I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. My wife works outside the home but is very supportive of me fishing.
I'm also retired and was in the Navy too from 67-71. My last ship was the USS Chukawan, AO-100 that went out of service in 72. I was a PN.

David if you make it I'll be happy to make your aquaintance. I'll be close to the bait house or a little in front of it. If not to windy I'll be wearing my dark blue Navy cap. It says MCPO retired on the front. Also look for a white F150 4door that also has a Navy plate. I plan to be there around 4:30 or so that's am. If you know for sure by Sunday evening let me know and I'll be looking for you. What are you driving. I got another idea. If I can remember I'll put a little colored flag on my antenna. I'm hoping to get some more silvers of a decent size as well as a few macks. The wife likes the silvers better than the macks but she does a good job cooking both. My first ship was the USS CIMARRON AO-22 it was one of two oilers on the Doolittle raid. That was before my time though. I was on it from 1958 to 1961. I was a Boiler Technician. There's been another oiler named Cimarron since then and it's out of commission too. Gosh! Am I that old. Gee! Anyway looking forward to seeing you if you do make it. riverviewsteve USN, RETIRED and loving it.

Awesome Steve. I'm planning to come out Monday morning to fish with you. I'll be driving a dark green Misubishi Montero and wearing my University of North Carolina blue baseball cap with NC on the front....go 'Heels...playing our arch nemesis Duke tonight for the ACC regular season championship.
I'll get out there probably in the 7 am to 8 am range after we get the girls off to school. I look forward to meeting you in person and fishing with you.
Blessings on you and yours!

The Pier Rat decals were done by a forum member about 2 years ago. His name is also David his screen name is Big-W-Man62. He has gone to kayak fishing, but he stops in now and then to see what's going on. I doubt if he has any left, but you could always leave him a message and ask. Or even make a post to see if any members have any left they want to get rid of. I bought 6 or 8 from him, and I can say they are great decals.
I also was in the Navy 85 - 91 as a PN. Nice to have a good Navy following here.

Lookn4tuna that's right. That's who it was. I'd forgotten and I didn't know his address. You are right. I only bought one or I'd offer him one. Good to meet all these exnavy guys.
David I'm looking forward to it. I'm still planning on making it. The weather for Monday seems to be cooperating. I'll try hard to remember to put my little colored flag on my antenna. Also as I said I'll be wearing my Navy ballcap. riverviewsteve USN, RETIRED and loving it.

Steve, it looks like I'll not be able to make it on Monday after all. I've had a flare up with my right hip and not very mobile at the moment. I will catch up with you at another time. I hope you have lots of good luck tomorrow,
