My wife was off on this beautiful Friday so we made our first trip out to the pier in several months. We only had a couple of hours to spare so figured we'd try to catch some of the spanish mackerel I've been reading about and also hopeful of seeing some silver trout. The trout never showed up for us but I may go back late today to see if they will show. However the mackerel were there in abundance. Most of what we caught were in the 13-14" range and we released all except the two largest that we gave to some guys who were keeping theirs. They are very slim and trim right now but a lot of fun. We caught all of them on an assortment of larger Sabiki rigs. The first one I tied on for my wife and she dropped it down. She made one jig and they nailed it. She brought up one mackerel and the others totally destroyed the rest of the rig. I put on another one with green mylar around the hooks and it took a little longer but they wiped that one out too. I was using a rig with 4 hooks and silver and gold tubing and mylar. They loved that one and it held up real good. Twice I landed 3 at a time. My wife also put out a double dropper rig with squid hoping there would be some whiting or trout around but the only thing she got were a few pinfish. We put one of the pins out on a live rig but there were no takers. We saw quite a few rays, a large shark, one sea turtle, and a very large dolphin that went after some of our mackerel. We were able to pull them away before Flipper was successful. It was a nice couple of hours and I may go back soon and try it again.
