I got to the SSP on Friday with my son and two buddies around 7:00, to catch the last hour of outgoing tide and the Macks were biting right away. We caught a bunch, but only 15 keepers and they quit biting around 8:00. I told everyone to hang around, cause they would probably turn on again around 1:00 when the tide started to slack and head back out. I caught one nice convict on the inside pilings in the incoming to pass the time. Macks turned on around 1:00 and we had our 60 fish limit by 2:00. Better sized fish in the afternoon.
Saturday same deal except there were five of us. Got 22 keepers first thing until around 8:30 when they quit. Went back to the pilings and managed to hook 3 more convicts, only got one up on the pier, but it was a nice one. Macks turned back on just before 1:00, and we had our limit of 75 by 1:30. We just kept catching and throwing them back after that.
I did see a guy catch two nice grouper on Saturday morning at slack tide using pinners. One fish was about 5-6lbs and the other was about 15lbs. He threw them back after some pictures.
We caught the Macks on sabikis. My buddies were using the store bought kind and were getting cut off a lot. I got 4 number 6 long shank silver hooks, and tied them to about 6 ft of fluorocarbon and tied a weight to bottom of it. I didn't get cut off all day, and caught just as many. My buddy for 99cents, bought some creme jigs at Wally World, they come 3 in a pack. I tied them on 50lb and made a sabiki for him, and they were wacking that good too. Lot of folks on the pier could not believe I was catching them with just a bare hook. Why make it harder than it needs to be.
I caught the Sheepheads on sand fleas I got at the bait shop.
Fun time to bring the kids out right now. They will have a ball.
Good Luck!!
