Hi folks!
Haven't been out that way in a while. Did a search on this but haven't seen it discussed since 2008.
Any chance they reopened those catwalks out by the Gandy? Surely some of that stimulus money got it fixed up and sparkling?
It's been a year or so since I been out on the skyway piers, never had much luck but been reading up on this site for tips. Maybe I'll get out there This coming Monday.
Just wondering about the Gandy, had some keepers there a while back!

They unfortunately have been closed since the end of 08 and will not open again. It was a wonderful place to fish, exercise or just visit. The bridge was deemed to unsafe so it was closed. There were some folks fighting to keep it open but lost out due to cost. No word yet on how they will demolish it due to cost as well. Such a shame. People still go over there and fish around it but I don't know of any great reports.

disregard my previous post:
wikipedia says:
"Also in July 2009, the animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (or PETA) offered to contribute funds to help save the Friendship Trail. However, the group is asking for fishing to be banned throughout the entire span. In addition, the bridge would be renamed as the "Sea Kitten Memorial Trail Bridge".[16]
In April 2010, the fate of the bridge was sealed, as both Hillsborough and Pinellas County Commissions voted to demolish the entire structure. The commissions are still proposing ways to commence demolition and a timetable has not yet been set"

Either way, it's a shame to see if go to waste. Depending on what they do, we could have a nice reef around there now. Would be nice if they made some short piers after the demolition to at least have some access to the area.

You've got that right !! You could fish off the Gandy catwalks and catch deep water species. Between the Gandy and the SkyWay fishing access , the Tampa /St pete area got its reputation for being a sportfishing center. Unfortunately , the bridge and catwalk fell into disrepair , and was deemed "unsafe" , and thus was closed to fishing.
Now, the only ones fishing the pilings are boat charters , and kayakers.
