Went to long point just north of crystal river to see if the redfish have shown up yet. We were throwing a 4” riptide plastic shrimp in rootbeer on ¼ oz. jigheads. We only had one hit so we decided to go a little off shore to troll for Spanish macks. While trolling in 20 feet of water, a nice cobia came out of the depths and my son threw one of jigs at him to see if it would bite. He ended up throwing it a few feet too far and the leader landed on his head and spooked him. After we caught some macks we decided to go closer to shore and try for the trout. We stopped in a 10 foot grass flat and saw a few tarpon laid up. I tried to throw a live pinfish to them but they didn’t want to cooperate. We started to get into the bluefish on jigs and a few on live pins. I have never seen blues this big around crystal river. All were running in the 4 to 5 pound range. They were all caught in 8 to 10 feet grassy bottom.
I should be posting more reports from my neck of the wood in the future. The fishing up here fires up in the winter time around the hot water discharge at crystal river.
