Got out to the SSP around 8 and bought some of the smallest shrimp Ive seen there in a long time. Anyway bait was abundant, large greenbacks and threadfins. Not much doing the first few hours except for there being tons of tarpon around all morning. I free lined a pinner and a threadfin in hopes to jump one for a little action, didnt work. The mackerel showed up in force around 11, I caught a few and the 2 guys next to me were catching a lot of them on cut whitebait. All of the macks I saw come over were pretty big. I caught a short grouper, about 17 inches on a shrimp of all things. I also had a pinner soaking all day with no takers. Great weather and a good day of fishing. Tide was outgoing the whole time I was there, I left about 1.

same thing with me on sunday. the bite started about 1 hour after the tide started to come in. all were bluefish and spanish macks. blues were pretty big by west coast florida standards. most were around 2 to 4 lbs. The macks were good sized too. they ranged from 21" to 26".
also decided to make one drift out for grouper and got a 21 3/4" that hit a big threadfin.
everything we caught was released. just wanted to go and get my fix.

Adding to the Oct 14 report, went out around 3 p.m. to catch the very last of an outgoing and fish the incoming, sabiki'ing large greenies and pins was pretty easy, on my first cast of a live greenie I got a nice plunk and a hook up of a shorty gag.
On the turn floated a live greenie, out under the opposite span, got a hit and my line zigged left as I was reeling then zigged right and pulled against the pier to break off....dunno what it was but it was fast. Maybe one of those big macks. Continued floating a few pins and greenies, got a couple more short grouper and a gafftail cat, oh and what i think was the dolphin pull and pluck of a pinfish....no keepers but a steady bite until we headed home.
Oh, wife caught a pelican, brought him up, released him....off he went...to go find another line to tangle in!
Did see the mackerel fishermen at the front, had a few nice ones they were bringing in.

Were you using braid line , or mono ? Did you use a mono leader ? If so , what pound test ?

With a 50# mono main , and a 50 # mono leader , I would have thought you would be able to control / direct the fish. But since you never saw it , I would assume it to be a "Big Toothey Critter". Oh well , that's why they call it fishing , instead of catching .
Better Luck next time !

Gerard
I was just over at Big Mike's site( with photos) and saw that they had several 30# kingfish come over the rail . Apparently they are getting them in the AM .
It would seem that you may have just been undergunned , and may need to invest in some steel wire for the kings ! (You know the big 'Toothey Critters).
Now get out there and haul in dinner .. lol !

I'm guessing it broke off on the main though....since it was whipping back and forth...maybe Steel main!! YEA!
