what size weights do you guys use on the north side for grouper and snapper (out going tide) back when I use to fish it alot I use 4oz and 6oz if I remember right I occasionally used 8oz ..now I'm re-thinking that and wonder if I could get away with using less weight to get down to the rocks..and what kinda of hooks are ya'll using now ? Its been I awhile since I was on the pier.thanks in advanced.

For grouper I use owner hooks size 4/0-10/0 depending on how the fish are biting and what size bait I'm using. 60lb-120lb leader. I normally free line, but if I use lead. I use enough to keep it on the bottom. 2oz-8oz depending on the current.
my basic snapper rig is a 1/0 owner, 1 1/2 foot 30lb leader, small swivel and a 1oz weight. I use the same set up fishing the pilings or the rock piles.
I use 7'6-8' rods so I tend to use less weight. As its a lot easier to cast out with a longer rod.
To each his own.
Good luck

also I learned last year to use braided line for snapper fishing, mono even touches the piling its done but braid is alot more resistant

Agree with Blacktip on the set-ups, except I've never caught anything if a 3-4 oz. sinker won't hold the bottom. When the current is ripping to hard the fish are hiding in a hole somewhere, so unless you drop in their hole your better off trying to freeline and that ain't gonna be easy.
Agree also on using braid. Especially for Grouper. You don't want the stretch of mono when you get rocked. Just ask Steve ( goindeep ), not to bring up a sore subject ( pun intended ). Where is that picture when you need it?
