Got to south pier around 5:30 p.m. as tide was changing to outgoing, wow, hot out, but bait everywhere, and it was fishermen's choice on favorite rock piles.
The baits were the little ones but bait nevertheless, netted a few and started tossing out to the edge of the rocks, immediately hooked a mack that gave me a nice fight but jumped the hook. Happened again so I left the j-hook behind, put a 1/0 circle hook on.
Over the next 4 hours between the wife and me, a 15 inch trout, a small red grouper, a small lady fish, a puffer, a lizard fish, a 24 inch mack, an 18 inch gag, oh and one pretty stout break off on 50 lb. leader, sucker made it to the rocks before I could start reeling...! Oh and a few visits by the flipper and the big sea turtle.
Those little baits are like shrimp, man, everything hits them, even a few pin fish hooked up.
You know what is kind of interesting, with power pro especially....you can really feel the different kinds of bites...some times it's a tap tap of a pinfish...some times it's a pick up and vibration, either a lady or a lizardfish...sometimes it's a nice thump...I think snapper or grunts...and sometimes it's a slow inhale and pressured pull....the groupers.
I can just imagine that piece of bait down there...being swarmed by the aquarium of various fishes until the more aggressive one comes along. Would be a kick to see a vid of what is going on down there.
Maybe something like this ..
