I finally registered on this board. It's about time I know.
I've got a question though. How are the mangrove snapper out at the Skyway this year? I caught some this past weekend early Sunday morning during the full moon, but that was first time I caught any decent snapper out there this summer. They just don't seem to be in like they have been years past.
How is everyone else doing on the snapper this season?

My son and I just started fishing the piers. Our first time on the piers was July 2, 2010. We generally fish the North Pier.
We have made a total of 5 trips to the pier. We have a total of(21) mangos in those trips. Only about 3 or 4 of those fish have been over 13".
Since we are still new to fishing the piers, I cant compare it to last year, or any other previous seasons.

it's about time you joined the forum Mike. I have had decent luck on the grovers this year but the bite isn't like it was last year.
I have my best luck on incoming tides on the pilings. I also had better bites on live greenies this year. Small ones about 3 inches with the tails cut off. Hook them behind the pec fins on a #30 fluro leader about 24" and a 1 oz egg sinker.
We may be out there friday and saturday night to see how the bite is.

Welcome Michael. Bout time you joined us Skyway pier rats. Snapper have been a bit slow this season. Some people have been getting lucky, but its an offseason. I fished the big bridge sunday we only landed 1 mango, 19 inches, but got spanked by many others. Quite a few grunts.. 6 big spanish, from 24 to 27 inches. And lots of juvi grouper.

Welcome to our slow world, Mook! Lol
Myself, other than limiting that one time a couple months back, I haven't heard too many good Mango reports...my roomie has caught one or two just about every time he fishes the SSP, usually 12-13 inches...
I may be out there one day this weekend, I'll let ya know if I get or see any.
See ya at Southside Package. Lol

Last year I had no problem limiting out on the full moons. This year, I can barely catch a break. Haven't been doing good at all. I plan on fishing the incoming tides to see if that produces... Was out there on Monday and didn't catch anything and I moved from rock pile to rock pile...

Thanks for the welcome guys and thanks for the reports on the "grovers."
In a way I"m glad to know I'm not the only one having a tough time this season. They are definitely not in like they have been in years past.
I'm not gonna give up though. I'm gonna head back out first chance I get.

Went to the SSP last night, got there about 1:30 am....not much goin on before I left at 8am, but I did manage 2 mangos @ 12 inches each...they were on pilings and were feeding around the tide switch. There were lots more down there but all I had was fry bait (couldnt catch any greenbacks), and I couldnt get the bait to stay on the hook very well. So me and the roomie will be having fresh snappah sammiches for dinner tonight
