If there is anyone on that lives or has experience with this area of New Jersey. My son just got stationed at the Coast Guard station there and wants to find a good place to fish with out going to far. Does anyone know of any good fishing piers, bridges or other places to fish in that area. Thanks in advance for any responses. He's just like his Dad he loves to fish. riverviewsteve

Theres a head boat right up by the light in LBI. Its the Miss Carolynn ann. Fished that boat growing up. The inlet is also a great fishing hole. Get some fiddlers And try tog fishing. From April to november. Green crabs also. Fluke should be in now. 1 oz egg sinker swivel then 36 inch leader and 2/0 kahle hook. Love mullet, whatever cutbait. Toss up current and drift back.. Flounder, striped bass, bluefish, weakfish and maybe a speck. Its not soak a bait fishing, its work. Or go to any of the beaches and soak bait. Never kown whats gonna bite. Might be a flounder/fluke. Or a 5 lb stargazer.

OK I think I found it. I just looked at the map of NJ and found Long Beach Island right next to Manahawkin. I imagine that was what you were referring to. Thanks again. Your name is Steve too isn't it? Steve

Also try Island Beach State Park (about 25 miles north of LBI). Not sure on prices anymore but I always had a Season Pass. I think you can still get a weekend pass for about 25 bucks or so. Fish the Gillikens area.(Access # 7 if I recall, been a while) Only active fishing allowed, hence no sightseers or tourists ever. If ya wanna fish the surf, that's the place. Ain't nothing like Stripers in the fall (ain't that right Eaglesfanguy). Only drawback is you gotta have a 4x4 vehicle to drive that area. Do not try it in the family car. LOL. Trust me, obey the signs. Pulled a few out over the years. Tourons...... Area # 23 allows walk ons but gets too crowded. Check it out.

Thanks Monty I sent it to my son. It covered a lot of territory. He should be able to find something. He's never had a lot of trouble finding new fishing holes when he gets transferred so he should be able to use that list. Hope to go see him in early October and maybe fish for stripers with him. I tried to go catch one with him in Mass when he was there but I guess they were in Maine that day. Thanks again riverviewsteve USN, RETIRED

I couldnt believe I actually saw Barnegat Light on here! I was born and raised in BL. I just moved to clearwater about a month ago and came on here to try and learn some Florida fishing tricks. As far as fishing in BL goes if hes a fisherman hes in the perfect spot. I know the coastie station very well and actually fished around many...i mean many a night. Since its the middle of summer his best bet is going for flounder and tog. The 5th st dock produces many big flatties, and its one street away from him. Best bet using spearing to get some like snapper bluefish and than sit them at the bottom of the channel...I heard it was great there last week with a couple 8-10 pounders coming up. For tog tell him to grab some green crabs or dig some sand fleas and fish close to the dock, there is a big ledge covered in musseld that the togs hang. Or he can walk out on the jetty but beware of snags. There is enough takle to ope a bass pro shop in the barnegat light inlet.......Once you get to sept oct the real fun begins!! Its striper time and everyone knows it...You can fish bunker off the beach or plug around the jetty.. Live eels are nice too from the jetty. The barnegat light bait and takle shop have a lot of info and there website gives the best most in depth fishing report i have ever known http://www.blbt.com...Hope this helps and hopefully you can give me some tips for fishing the tampa bay area.....I have a couple top secret tips and spots im willing to trade for some in return

Thanks jkdecker I just sent it on to my son. Can't wait to get to see him in early Oct. I'm dying to catch a striper. I been fishing the NSP for 10 years and still haven't gotten my keeper grouper yet. I keep trying. The best I've done so far was a 19". I've taken home lots of macks, sea bass and trout but that Grouper still avoiding me. I'll get him one of these days. I will always answer questions and give advice when I'm sure I know what I'm talking about. I'm sure not the best fisherman out there by a long shot but I doubt anybody has any more fun than I do. I just love being out there regardless if I catch anything. The comradrie with other fishermen. Sunups and sundowns. Having said that I will answer any questions that I can and provide advice as long as I know what I'm talking about. Also I will tell you who to ask and things like that. Most of the bait shop people are very experienced and will help you as much as they can. I won't be back out there for awhile yet but when I'm coming I always put it here so If some of the members are out there I'll get a chance to meet them. My favorite spots are right in front of the bait shop and the first parking space prior to your getting to it. Maybe 75 yards or so before you get there. I use to have a favorite spot for black sea bass just before the 1st bathrooms but since they closed half the pier it hard to get my spot any more. Also the end of the pier is pretty productive. Having said all this it means nothing if there not biting. One piece of advice I feel pretty safe giving is if you don't have any get you some sabiki's. I like the heavy duty ones myself. They are good for everything. My wife caught 2 14' groupers at the same time once. Course we had to put them back but she had a lot of fun. Welcome to the site, the area and good fishing. Tight Lines and full coolers as they say. riverviewsteve USN, RETIRED

When I used to live up that way we always took off the first full moon after Oct 15th to fish for strippers off Cape May. There is a "secret" spot in Avalon NJ. take the 48st beach entrance and walk thur the dunes to the beach. That area of the barrier island used to shoot out @ 600 yrs farther in the atlantic then any other spot from Atlantic city to Cape May. Right along the traveling path of stripper. Even when Strippers were rare @ 30 yrs ago ( Wow never thought I say that. Geting old) we would catch a few.
Good luck

The Pier and Surf forum is good for New Jersey, but this one is even better. The NJ Striper Forum. njstriper.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgiI've been a member for years. I don't post much, but I like to see what's going on back where I grew up. Plus one of my aunts live down the shore in Belmar, so they hook me up when I go up for vacation.

Thanks Snookmook I'll forward that info to my son. I don't know if you remember me but I'm the guy didn't know the snappers from the grunts. I'm still embarrassed about that. Thanks for setting me straight anyway. I did appreciate it. That crew on that boat wouldn't have let me get away with to many snappers anyway. They were pretty through. Great guys. I thought I was going to go see my son in Oct but he told me he just got a part time job. So with his Coast Guard duties and the part time job don't look like he is going to have much time for Dad. Well anyway thanks again. riverviewsteve USN, RETIRED.

steve, I had a place in manahawkin for 10 yrs, fishing either end of the island will produce fish, almost any where along the island you get stripers and blues in the surf. Go to you tube and search " Blue Fish Blits at the Jersey Shore" That will open and from there you will see a few different videos. Flounder are the treat up there..both inlets produce. Like Steven said the Carol Ann is the party boat to go on but there is a place right down from them that you can rent a small boat w/ motor and drift around the inlet. U need killies up there on the bay side.thats the bait of choice for flounder. kip
