I spent the last week reading this forum and its info concerning tips/techniques for mangrove snapper... Decided to give it a try yesterday. I had a little success, but have a couple questions. 1) Whats the best way to hook shrimp, or cut whitebait? 2) Are there any particuliar "areas" on the south pier that I should concentrate my efforts on? Thanks for any help.

Have you read this thread? : skywaypiers.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=482Im not sure if the info you want is in there, but its a good start...My advice is to fish the incoming tide (early morning or at night), with cut greenbacks, underneath the road you stand on to fish as your facing West, next to the pilings (I have good luck between the last bathrooms and the end)...when the tide is coming back at you underneath your feet, toss you bait almost straight down as close as you can get to the pilings...let it drift back underneath you (let line out as it drifts)...youll feel small taps in your line..I like to call those taps "Mango Morse Code"....lol....you gotta be quick on the draw to get em, otherwise theyll steal your bait. I cant tell you exact piling numbers, as they always change...just try a few here and there...you can also pitch your bait over underneath the east span (by the pilings as well)...you should get some bites there... As far as how to hook your bait, Id ditch the shrimp..everything will eat it, and its hard to get to stay on the hook...cut greenies are much better, IMO, and youll weed out some of the pinners and trash fish...I cut greenies into 3 or 4 pieces (depending on size), and just hook it as good as you can...its a nonstop game with those snapper though, theyll rob you more than you care to admit...just keep re-baiting and putting it next to the pilings, youll get em sooner or later. Sometimes I have good luck with snapper on outgoing tide out on the reefs with cut greenies and a 2 or 3 oz weight... Hope this helps.

goindeep:
thanks for the help.... Me and my son went out again Friday afternoon/evening. Fished the outgoing tide at the north pier this time. We ended up keeping 7 (5 were 11"-12", 2 about 15"). Thanks again for the info.
