Hey Guys,
Just stumbled across this board. I used to be on the old board back in the day and sorta lost touch. Anyways...
I headed out with a freind to the SSP last night. Got there around 7:30 or so. This was my first trip out since I lost my cast net to some object between the two piers, but bait was thick enough to grab 2-3 baits per drop of the sabiki. Since I knew we had a long incoming tide I set my 9/0 out with a 20 inch mullet under the pier. Within 10 minutes or so, BAM! This thing hit like a freakin train. Don't think it was goliath since it was flying and running parallel to the pier. It was the weirdest thing. After about 5 minutes he broke my 200 lb mono. I think it was that "WTF" i was reading about on some other threads. As the sun went down we freelined some large whitebait out and caught a nice mack, and a bunch of ladyfish(more bait). Once the sun set, it went dead. Around midnight I was bottom fishing with a large pin for tarpon under the pier and caught a nice undersized grouper. About 20" and could have easily been a nice sandwich but we threw him back. It was the first time I caught a decent sized grouper under the pier and not out at the rocks. After that it went dead again until we started to notice the tarpon piling up around 1:30 AM or so. I had just caught a big blue runner so I sent him under the bridge. Within a couple clicks of the reel I had hooked up with one. It gave me a nice headshake and then wrapped around the piling and SNAP. All in all, it was a great trip out. Weather was great. Besides the long incoming tide, it was alot of fun!
