Daughter wanted to go fishing so we headed out to the SSP this morning. Got to the SSP around noon and set up between the last bathroom and bait shop. Plenty of bait in the water and we saw some macks in the mix. It was a little windy but that kept most of the boats away and kept the heat down a little. The girls caught a few Macks while I was drowning some pin fish under the east span. Tried floating a few out to the east rock piles but no takers. Big catch of the day was my daughter earning $15 for catching bait for a guy who left his net at home. Saw a handful of other Macks and a couple rays come over the rail but not much else.

Had Friday off so out to the Pier I went. Hit the SSP about 6:00 AM and loaded up on some big ole Pins, biggest I have seen in a while. Started on the East side with the incoming down in the Alley. First bait out a 21", man I am excited. Next two baits more shorts, 16"-18" or so, then nada. Starting moving around with more shorts at each stop, a few at 20". Between waiting on the tide change I filled the well again. Same thing, baits tore up by the shorts, no keepers. Didn't keep track of the numbers, but I caught Grouper until about 2:00 Am Saturday and 21" was the best I could manage. I was going to call this report, "Shorts, Shorts and Mo Shorts".

I have a question. When the tide is incoming and I'm fishing off of the east side I dont know where to put my bait for grouper. Do you try to get near the pilings, or freeline it out the other side to the other rock pile, or just go right under the other span?

I fish the East side the same as you would fish the West, that is free line a live bait as far out into the rocks as it takes to get a fish. Sometimes that is 70 to 100 yards, sometimes that could be 150 to 175 yards out. I asked Scooter one time how far out he ran his bait, his response was " til something knocks the piss out of it".
