Good chance of being at SSP tomorrow afternoon, finally should have favorable wind. Anyone been there the past few days with bait and catch reports? Thanks.

Since I'm new here, what is considered a favorable wind? In the Hatteras area the cliche was "the east is least and the west is best" but that was not necessarily so. We probably caught more fish on a southwest wind than any other one. A northeast wind generally would cause the fish to turn on but then if it continued they would shut down. I know there is no perfect rhyme or reason but what seems to be consistent down here as far as a good wind?

I'll let derbirbboy speak for himself, but generally if you want to freeline on the outgoing tide you don't want the wind blowing to strong out of the W, SW or NW. It makes it harder for the bait to swim against the wind load load on the line. Also, if your casting out, you won't get to far if its really blowing. I always check the winds for direction and speed.

Out at the pier, havetofish is right. Since we are restricted to fishing the West side span, you would prefer an East or Northeast wind for casting purposes as well as for freelining. Obviously tide is a key item so an outgoing will help with freelining. Winds are usually lighter in the am and typically we get a strong west wind caused by the seabreeze later in the afternoon. It all depends on what you are targeting and the way you would like to fish.

The last two guys are right, especially as we are stuck on one span as jlamberg said. Even with an outgoing tide if the wind is strong it will push the float right back at you sometimes. I'm not sure on the effects of wind and the fish biting, I just meant with the east wind at least I can cast without cussing.
