Went out Wednesday and Thursday of last week mid afternoon and then again midnight-6am on Friday morning. Caught Spanish mackerel, a big blue runner, and some other bait fish on the north pair. Spanish mack was 14" and my buddy caught a similar sized one. Had a grouper rig sitting out with the blue runner cut up and didn't get anything with that. It was funny going out Friday morning and seeing a lot of top water action but no sabiki bites or anything.I used a GULP shrimp and had bait fish hitting it but all were too small. Giving it a shot again this coming Thursday/Friday morning and afternoon. What's been hitting lately? I don't have a cast net so I'm stuck with these sabikis for bait.

Just because there is action on the surface does not mean that is where the bait fish are feeding. Macks and Blue busting bait force those bait fish out to the top. Drop that sabiki t the bottom. Then crank up one of two turns. Jig the rig and if no bites , one or two more cranks. Keep doing this until you get a hit. No hits then walk five feet to your right of left and start again. Soon enough you will find the right location and depth. Good luck. Cast nets are good but if you do not have the correct equipment to keep them alive you have nothing but dead bait.

Thanks for the Sabiki tip, I usually would just wait for it to hit bottom and jig it. I also found the aerial view of the "artificial reefs" which is going to make things ALOT easier.

redneckrob monty's right about the sabiki's but try this sometime. Especially if there are any baitfish swarming around the top. A couple of times I have taken a float and just let the sabiki hang right under it. When the bait is high sometimes they hit it pretty good. I just put one of the small sabikis down with the float and use them as needed. You could also use a little larger sabiki and maybe you'll pick up a mack or two also. Good luck an welcome aboard. Can't get out for myself for awhile. Just had eye surgery 27 April and can't lift anything for awhile. Sure anxious to get out again. Tightlines riverviewsteve You to Monty
