I don't like getting political, but I am fully against any new drilling in our beautiful gulf, and I'm not a tree hugger. The benefit from every study I've seen is far outweighed by the risk. The oyster and shrimp business out of LA is set to lose a half billion dollars estimated, not to mention the ugliness and sport fishing damages that may follow. All the technology we have, yet none to get away from our dependence on black gold.

Im not going to get into whether Im for it or against it, its a mute point really because none of the options are good. Lesser of two evils kinda thing. Its either gonna be pay $5 a gallon, kill the fish in the gulf or kill the wildlife in Alaska. However I will be pissed if this spill ends up affecting our fishing after this harsh winter we went through.
On a side note at one of the local places I go sometimes to fish Ive been seeing snook cruising through left and right. I saw about 12-15 yesterday running in pairs. Good to know some of them made it.

Don't want to state my opinion since this is a fishing board. Glad to hear about the snook. Estimates now are that we lost 15% of the population which is much better than expected. I have seen my share of them as well lately. We just have to remember to follow all the regs out there and treat all fish we are not keeping well. If you release it, take care of it. Too valuable of a resource these days to not take care of.

Let's just do this right and stop playing games. Give our young man and woman in harms way a major victory and use the skills they were trained for. Bomb the hell out of the middle east, kill all those American haters and take all the oil. If we wait much longer those desert rats will have nukes and we will all be living in fear.

That attitude right there is why people fly planes into our buildings. Sounds to me like you're already living in fear.

That be some funny sheet right there and fear..........you bet your ass we live in fear......................fear of our own gubberment, the most twisted, dishonest, self serving, self policing gubberment on planet earth. Justice has a new meaning.................Just Us!! Even after this mess in the gulf do ya think its gonna make one bit of a difference to them..why hell no..................oil is money and money out bids any disaster. The seismic work is going on in the gulf as we type and nothing we do is gonna stop it........................nothing. So prepare yourself, the glimmer of gas blow offs offshore will be in place come hell or high water.

I had a relative that worked high up in BP for a stretch. They were always lousy bout safety, and that was just in their refineries not the drills. Im talking monthly numbers of deaths. But a few years ago they made massive profits so at least they have money to burn to pay for this disaster instead of the gubberment
Anywho, Im against drilling regardless. Love my coastal wildlife to much to give anything that might have the potential to destroy it an oppurtunity. But I am squeezing as much fishing as I can in incase this hurts us here

I was all for increased exploration to improve our energy independence, because I thought that technology had progressed to the point that this couldn’t happen. I’m definitely re-thinking that idea. I know accidents happen, but a nagging little voice says that “Big Oil Arrogance” is part of the underlying cause. As for the middle-east, it's not their oil, they just happen to be closest to it. We need to figure out a way to drill at an angle and suck it out from underneath them. ;D

Floridaboy, we get very little oil from the middle east, Canada is our biggest supplier and holder of the largest oil reserve on the planet. The thing that troubles me is the fact that there were fail safe valves in place or so they say. Three in fact including a "deadman" feature that should have cut off/closed the casing should something catastrophic happen. Now they say the only way to fix/stop the spill is to drill another well and that will take 3 months. At 5000 barrels a day over a period of 90 days its gonna be a huge mess, in case you don't know thats 220,000 gallons a day. With the prevailing winds and tides I'm willing to bet the pilings on the skyway will be lubed up soon. They have already closed fishing off the coast of LA, MS and AL, look for closure here also.

unrelated just felt like posting, this morning had 2 big break offs, one snapped my 80lbs mono leader, I dont know maybe cheaply made, then had another break off my 60 pound braid above my steel leader that is probably just from wear and tear from last year when I was hauling them in and the weight was twisting up in the braid.
Tomorrow gonna get some decent mono or flouro cuz the pinners just dont get bites on steel, frozen sardines do tho. Guy next to me had 4 break offs and caught 3 shorties biggest being 18in, dont know if he just didnt have strong enough line but he is a regular so I am sure he knows what he is doing, Me it was just stupid mistakes today
