Does anybody know how to catch blue runners at the pier? I would assume to tip sabiki's with cutbait/shrimp and let them down about midlevel in the water. Anybody have any sure fire ways to catching them?

jaeforceone. One time I had the wife out on the north pier with me and not long before that someone had told me that little gold hooks work just as well as sabikis. So in my wisdom I put 8 little gold hooks on a line baited with squid, dropped it down and handed it to my wife. I had just turned around to bait my pole and She is hollering. Help me. I turn back around and she is winding for all she's worth. Damm if she didn't have 5 bluefish. I cut that rig in half right then. But we dropped it back in the water and never got another blue all day. You never know. Kinda like the macks when they are around. Just about hit anything. Just curious are you military? I'm retired Navy. riverviewsteve

haha yeah I've caught bluefish too late at night when its the lowest tide. we'd cast net small ballyhoo that floated across and then free line them right in front of us. Caught whole squid too, boy do they feel weird alive. I'm not any military, just thought the username was catchy when I made it up a few years ago.

Was fishin at the end of the ssp one day throwing out my sabiki for thread fins would throw out probly 30 or so feet bounce it off the bottom and every cAst would bring in 2 or 3 runners each time it really depends on if they are there or not

yea, ive always caught them using a bigger sabiki rig with tipped shrimp......but i wouldnt use a whole sabiki, maybe cut it in half, or when you feel a hit, try and bring them in one at a time, 2 of them will send your sabiki rig into a tailspin and that just gets annoying.

Lostman1 good to see you posting. Thought you had faded into the sunset or something. Welcome. riverviewsteve. Thanks jaeforceone. That is a catchy title. I thought that might be one of them hard charging roughneck types. Tight Lines buddy.

Thats a good answer for you Jae........and like polkcnty said, depends on if they are around. If they are it's usually not a problem gettin some. And like lostman said,go with the bigger models,it'll last longer.I have caught most at the end of ssp in the alley.Good luck dude.
