If anyone is interested I got some Sabiki news.
I stopped at Southeastern this morning at 2907 N Florida ave in Tampa and they were having I guess you would call it a yard sale. It will last through Saturday 3 April. They had a box full of Sabiki's for .99 cents apiece or 6 for 5.00. They were a brand called SALT. I'd never heard of them. They had 4 sizes 2,4,6 & 8. 8 being the biggest. Not as heavy as I would like but maybe good enough for baitfish. On the 8s branch test was 10 and main line test was 17. I bought 12 so they still got lot's left. Oh yeah! and I was looking around inside and they had a sabiki with two hooks that was a size 20. I think it was 50 pound line and if I remember correct it cost 3.99 each. Gee that was a big hook. Then on to Kmart. They got the heavy ones now. They had three different size 14s all Hayabusa Two of them were 20/30 line test and one of them was 30/40 line test. The difference was the feathering or whatever they call it around the hooks. They were different colors. I think two of them were 4.99 and the 3rd was 4.49. Also if your military retired or active they have sabiki's of various sizes at the MacDill exchange. Hope this info is of some use to some of you. Tight Lines and let the Grouper season begin in earnest. Go! Go! Go! riverviewsteve

That is a great tackle store and that was some sale you got into. I just bought one of the Mustad's #14 at Wally World for $2.49. Sabiki's #4 are good for those fry baits.

Well since the Sabiki news went over so big the first time I'll sweeten the news. Went back to Southeastern today just to look at them Hayabusa size 20s to see if I was seeing right and I was. They only have two hooks, with 40/60 trunk and mainlines. As I was looking though I also found a Marathon size 16 with 8 hooks and with 30/50 trunk and mainlines. Man it just keeps getting better. Can't wait to get back out there. Next week if all goes well. riverviewsteve

Hey there riverview. What kind of rigs are these that your lookin at?What i mean is are they the kind with just the fake fish skin,i guess we could say "the most common ones".I have tried quite a few different styles on the sabikis, squid, shrimp and some other odd lookin creations and the "most common" one seem to do the best.Dosen't matter who made them, they will all perfom the same.Only difference is how well they are made.
You mentioned the gold hooks.Wasn't anything called a sabiki when i was younger still livin in south fl fishing the piers on the east coast.......we used gold hooks. You don't need to bait them if your tryin to get greenbacks and pilchards or sardines, just jig it and they will hit the plain hooks.Bait'm up if your lookin for the pins, grunts and runners.

grouperscooper I am looking at the three different sabiki's I bought from Southeastern. As you said they are basically about the same except for hook size. Only one of the three the Marathon says it's high visibility fish skin. However they pretty much look alike as far as the dressing goes. The only difference I see is on the size 20 with the two hooks. It has some pink feathers or whatever it is sticking out of the fish skin on one and white on the other. I bought me some more gold hooks too. I got plenty but just couldn't resist it. Grown man's candy store you know. I didn't do bad though. I only went in to get one of them monster sabikis and ended up with only 6 other items to boot. One of them being that size 16 sabiki by marathon which also has 8 hooks. That makes two for me cause I cut them in half. Tight Lines amigo I can't wait to get back out there. Got to get there a couple of times before I have my eye surgry on 27 April. Doc says I can't lift more than ten pounds for a month after that. So I gotta get out there before the macks are gone. Still need to pick up a keeper grouper too. Well I only been going there for 10 years. Can't rush these inportant occasions I guess. riverviewsteve

Hey riverview, thx for the heads up. Went out to SE and loaded up on Sabiki's. From what I could see they had 4/6/8's left 6 packs for 5.00, you can't beat that. And they they make great Xmas tree ornaments as well!

I wonder if one could fashion a "Sabiki" out of steelon leader material? That way one would not get cut off.

Thanks bigtom I couldn't agree more. Did you see the big one I was talking about. The size 20 with two hooks and the size 16. I got one of each. I just finished breaking down the 16. I just can't see getting 8 macks at the same time on that rig. You might actually land some of them. If all goes well I am going to be out there very early tuesday morning. At least I hope so depending on weather and wind of course. no1painter I been trying for a long time to figure out how to tie a sabiki someway so it would last longer. The wire idea isn't bad and it would probably work if the hooks had holes instead of being tie ons. My wife is Japanese and her brother in law gave me a whole bunch of little hooks like they use over there and on the sabikis and I had a heck of a time tying that line on them. I'm always trying to make sabikis or something like that so maybe I should try them hooks. I have tryed a few times to tie feathers, plastic or colored string on some small hooks but didn't have to much luck at that. I'll keep trying. One of these days who knows. Tight Lines guys and good luck. I'm going to try out some of them bigger sabiki's next week. Hopefully riverviewsteve Oh if anyone is on the North Pier Tuesday morning and I do make it. I'll be wearing a navy ball cap and driving a white ford super cab. I'll try to remember to put my pier rat decal in the windshield.

Hey Grouperscooper, I grew up in S. FL fishing the gold hook rigs. Moved away for a bunch of years and suddenly ran across these "sabiki" things. Figured it must have been the same idea. Glad to hear the gold hook method didn't go away, as if, the fish had changed their minds? hehe. Oh, and what about Pilchard rings? I was a broke kid, never went that route.

Pilchard rings......stupid lookin but effective.I had one that was made of mono once.It was like a minnie seine net....was about 18 inches tall by about 8 inches across with 4 of the orange strips through it.Made a few also that to my surprise actually "caught bait".
Another thing not many know of is blue hooks workin almost as good as gold ones. The smaller bluegill type hooks.....with a shiney finish to them.
What parts of s.fl did you fish??

Grouperscooper I used them Pilchard rings a few times and had a little success. I'm always trying to invent fishing items. I bought a brass ring about 8inches across I guess and tied all kinds of rings in it about the same size as Pilchard rings. I used the type like key rings. May have been to stiff. I only used it once I think. Believe I'll try it again. I think I'll try to make the one you were talking about with the mono rings Sounds like it might work. I would imagine a lighter line would work best. More flexible. Nothing to lose by trying. riverviewsteve

I think the rings are more of a east coast thing.
You can use wire(like for kingfish rig wire)to make them also.I have seen some people use pieces of old cast nets also.Red also works besides the orange material to attract the bait to your rig.
The one i was speaking of was kinda like a chunk cut out of a cast net with a straight piece of strong plastic through the top and bottom from one side to the other.Top part had a swivel attached to tie to and the bottom also had a bigger clip type swivel to put your weight on.You can make some thing like this in any size or shape you like,5x10...20x8.....what ever you want.
If you use wire to make some go with some thing in the #40-50 range, not to stiff but won't get all bent up and useless to quick either.
What i didn't like about usin the rings was the current gettin ahold of them......feels like your usin 15oz of lead! But you dont have to deal with a bunch of sneaky little hooks either.

I grew up in Miami and used pilchard rings all the time for whitebait. The ones I used were just 5 or 6 gold rings and a swivel. Don't think Sabiki's were invented back then, at least I never saw one. I think they are illegal now because they are basically a gill net. Anyway, I was doing some searching and found these pic's of some of the red ribbon kind.

Havetofish I have used some that looked similiar to those pictures. I had one of two different sizes at one time. They wore out pretty fast though. I may still have one some where. If I'm not mistaken I seen some in the NSP bait shop yesterday. At least I thing that's where I saw them. Thanks for the tips Grouper. I may try to make one again. I kind of like to experiment with things like that. Tight Lines guys. I'll give a report Monday evening whatever befalls me. riverviewsteve

I fished 79th st causeway once or twice, but I lived in West Miami/Coral Gables and then the Kendall area, so most of fishing was in Biscayne Bay and south through the Keys. Fished Rickenbacker, MacArthur and Venetian Causeways a lot at night. Back in those days you could catch Mahi just outside the mouth of Biscayne Bay. Just find a weed line and it was fish on.

I liked that big size 20 Sabiki so much I went back to Southeastern to stock up. They only had two left. I wanted ten. I got both of them and ordered 8 more. Also bought 5 of the size 16. I said did you have a run on Sabikis. He said actually we have sold quite a few. I thought to myself I brought this on when I told everyone about them. Ha Ha What goes around comes around. Me and my big mouth. But I got news for you. I'd do the same thing again tomorrow cause that's who I am. If I can't share with my fellow fishermen shame on me. So if I see any more bargains. Stand by for the news. Tight Lines everyone. Having surgery next Tuesday. Save something for me. riverviewsteve

Well the surger is finally over. If the wife wants me any better lookin than this she's gonna have to buy me a mask. Still pretty red around the eyes but he did pretty good job. Rather be fishing than sitting around waiting to heal. Oh well I been killing time breaking down some sabikis. I don't know about anybody else but 4 hooks is enough for me. Them 8 hook sabikis is just too long. You need a 15 foot pole to use one of those unless you want one heck of a mess. Sure hope they figure out how to stop that oil mess. Tight Lines everybody riverviewsteve
