my checklist went like this...
1. Find a Penn rod and reel combo in the dumpster at my parents neighborhood. Check
2. Be sure nothing is wrong with it. Check
3. Put some line on it. Check
Im hoping my fishing luck works out the same.

hahaha i hope it goes like that, ive never caught a keeper grouper.
yeah im for real i threw the bag in and thought i saw the top of a rod sticking out. so i turned back around and gave it a pull and the whole set up came out. its a Penn No. 85 reel on a Penn Baymaster 5 1/5 foot medium action rod. it could prolly use a cleaning but it works good.
i havent really researched it fully yet but apparently they were discontinued in the late 80s. its gonna be my grouper set up until i can afford a new one

why it that? the gear ratio? like i said i havent researched it yet Yes......and i believe it's a smaller reel correct? You're at a minimum gonna want to fish #50 line to have "some what" of a chance at gettin the keepers from the piles.Don't know if #50 mono will fit that reel. And being it is a bit older reel braid would probably destroy it. Pawn shops my man......place ta go when the $ is tight.

3.1 to 1 ratio 400yds of 20lb mono. Its like a peerless or a 309. Bit undersized. I have an old Penn longbeach 68 in good shape. used to be my grouper cranker. Its got 300yds of 100lb power pro on it. you can have it for 25 bucks.... i live in Tampa usf area.
