Decided to head out towards Tampa (Picnic Island) today, since a friend told me that Sheepies were all over the area last weekend...Got there about 11am, fished for about an hour....No sheepies, no nada. There was 4 other people fishing there, no one was catching anything other than an older guy who caught the same small stingray twice...lol
Decided to head out to a spot in Bradenton I fished last week to try for some trout...Got 5 doz shrimp from Gandy Bait and Tackle for $5.00 (yeah, theyre not real big but thats a deal)
Got to the spot about 2pm...fished till I ran out of bait at about 6:30pm. It was slow for about the first hour...but once the tide was about to turn the bite turned on and I caught a decent bunch of fish....The first two fish of the day were spanish macks, both about 17 inches...the notch in the rod directly underneath the guide is a 15" mark...
Then for the next few hours I caught about 15 ladyfish to 20 or so inches...I was hoping for trout or even more macks....but at least they made the day interesting...They were jumpy and feisty, so it was fun....
Then it was slow again until the sun was getting ready to go down....Caught a few more ladies, a catfish, and a fat, corn-fed pinfish...then just as I was about out of bait, I finally landed my first trout....but he was only about 13 inches...so back he went...
Overall it was a great day, great weather, and a great, peaceful, secluded spot...At one point, I pulled my lines out of the water, sat on the dock, and pondered life and the universe for about an hour as I just took in the scenery and enjoyed the perfect weather...Im tellin ya, theres nothing more therapeutic than a day like today. I wish I had them more often.
Fish on, folks. April is almost here.
