the grouper bite was on....landed about 10 (18-20") and 2 24" gags too bad we had to throw them back. Macks were ok, but didnt really target them. Goliath was biting only when the tide turned. Greenbacks showed up for about 2 hours, pinners everywhere, Overall a very awesome trip today

no freeliners. just a 4oz swivel weight 80lb liter line and a circle hook. tossed about 30+ yards . Used pinners for bait. The bite was awesome. everyone in our party caught a grouper including my sister n law. This is how the bite was back in the day....i miss those good ole days

went out last saturday and it was a mad house. Had 3 rods with nice size pinners on the end at my favorite grouper rock pile. Nothing hit. So i went down to the end at the crosswalk and dropped down a stingray wing and caught me a 400+ pound goliath. Better than no grouper at all

There are lots of babies at the pier. And a few big boys.
i pulled one around 200lbs off the north pier on night last september. i refrain from fishing for them from the pier, till i perfect a hook removal system.
Those big ole teddy bears are allways full of jewelry.

Like Stephen said, you need a way to dehook them without hauling them up. They really need to relax the restrictions on them, there are plenty around. I hope you know that taking them out of the water is prohibited. In fact I wouldn't be posting any pic's like that.

gsellers this might save you some grief in the future if the man were present. It is a quote from the FWC Regs. painter
Removing smaller goliath groupers from the water to remove hooks is not necessarily a bad practice, but this process must be done with care, using proper fish handling techniques, and as expeditiously as possible.
The taking of photographs after removal of hooks and posing for pictures with goliaths is not considered an immediate release of the fish.

i have talked to 4 FWC officers and they have assured me that taking a quick photo is ok but not walking down the pier showing everyone and posing for 100 pics. Both pics literally the fish was out of water for like 20 seconds no lie. After i picked the fish up, wife snapped a pic and in one motion let him go to where he came from. I have all 4 officers names and contact info and they said to call them if i ever get hassled about it by another officer. these 2 baby goliath were caught on accident. They actually ate a small pinner i had freelining.
