I bough a 8'6" Shimano Tiralejo casting rod about 2 year ago and it has been siting in my shed ever since. Im looking to buy a reel for it but am torn between the two above choices.
From what I read the daiwa has solid aluminum side plates and the torium has stamped.
I have multiple daiwa sealine reels and quite a few shimano reels, but I think im leaning towards the daiwa. Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks

I had a torium 20...never had any problems with it BUT have heard of other people having their anti-reverse fail or something crucial along those lines I returned it a month later...get the saltist (all metal)...for an extra 50$ though I'd get lever drags saltists or even the tyrnos! with a proper cleaning and greasing before you use it out the box, It will last! Trust me I just got a new tyrnos and the "factory grease" was barely there on all the important components and the grease was black.

Yea I hear you on the parts not being properly greased. i always check my gear when I buy it (upgrade drag washer and such and proper greasing). As far as the new lever drag daiwas go, I never really though of them as a surf reel. Guess Ill have to do a bit more reading.
Thanks

I love both the Tyrnos and saltist... Not a lick of problems with either.
What size you looking for? i have a saltist 40, tyrnos 20, Might want to look at the shimano trinidads.. there bulletproof. I have a tn-30 perfect all around reel.

Well holy smokes batman............ go with the saltist! I just got finished tearing down my saltist 40 high torque. and my trinidad TN-30. Damn near identicle. inner workings gears springs, etc. the saltist i was impressed with. simpler, more stainless steel gears. the saltist has brass pinion and main gears, so does the trinidad. The saltist has stainless other gears, the trinidad uses plastic. other differences. saltist uses just 3 different screw sizes, the trinidad 5. the saltist has more bearings while the trinidad uses some insert sleves., plastic. more tiny parts to lose on the trinidad also. Im very impressed with the saltist, easy maintanance, simple and quick. trinidad too much plastic and tiny spring loaded parts. my tyrnos was simple and strong, same for the saltist. The trinidad is a Pain in the ass. Go for the saltist its a trinidad on steroids.

yeh i got the 50h also and its been great! only issue i had which was covered under warranty was the dog gear popped out on a little snapper bottom fishing. the guys at daiwa service were top notch and was super fast with repair and communication. +1 on the Saltist

Saltist
Throw in some new carbontex washers and you'll put you drag around #22-#24 pds.Thats quit a bit of power for a reel of it's size.......and they hold up!I fish a high speed 40 with #80 braid at the pier and in 255 feet of water and have had NO ISSUES.
And like Eaglesfan said....your gettin just as much quality with a better price tag.
