Reports from the NSP say the Silver Trout and some Specks are hitting at night and early AM up by the bait house. I may hit that first in the wee hours then head to the SSP for the incoming around 8:00 AM or so. Reports of Black Sea Bass as well. Maroon F-150 with a pier rat decal on the rear window. Jack

Not quite.......first Lake City exit on 75 to the NSP tollbooth........2 hrs 35 min.If i'm by myself that is.Fished the cedar key area a bit when i first moved up here but it's been awhile since.A slower pace of fishing compared to places such as the skyway. But have caught some nice reds n trout there.Plenty of wading area if ya don't mind doin the stingray shuffle for a few hours.Shellmound can be very productive for wadin when the black drum move in too.Never got down to Crystal River.....to far to go when i had no idea where to go.

haha you must drive fast it takes me 2 hours 30 mins from the Williston exit all the way down 75 where it meets the end of 275 SSP, I'm sure if you didnt cut across the St.Pete area it would take you the same...I hear the shell mound is a really good place for kayaks too...don't really have a truck though to go haul one...

I take 75 down to the bottom end of 275 also. It's a bit longer in mileage but faster not havin to deal with goin through all the traffic and idiots on the road.Do you know the first bridge comin into cedar key,one with the little pier and boat ramp?Caught reds, trout, flounder, bluefish, ladyfish, sheepshead and the occasional 2-3 foot sharks there. If you are standing at the end of that pier facin the bridge and you count the colums from the left to right of the bridge....the 9th set has a small channel just to the right side.If your gear will allow you to cast that far it can be very productive.I have also done quite a bit of wadin behind the cemetary and done okay. One thing that i've noticed is around these areas (CK,steinhatchee, suwanee, etc) is that when the bite is hot....it's hot.But when it's not it IS NOT.I have been over to CK since the new main pier was completed. As we walked up two fellas were leavin with there limit on trout.Said the bite was pertty good till the tide switched. They were fishin live shrimp under floats. My biggest black drum came off that pier.47 1-2 pds on a 1 inch piece of shrimp with a small fresh water baitcaster.

yeah I hear that first pier holds some good fish from a castable distance... As far as the new pier, there are black drum usually behind the bathroom caught on fiddler crabs, sea trout at the last T part of the Pier, don't really need to cast far either (just right in front) aside from catfish the trout comb the pier for bait and stuff... There is also a whiting hole at the farthest left corner of the pier. From that corner you want to cast as far as you can in the direction of the tip of that corner. I've seen tarpon almost breaking the surface chasing bait around the pier in the summer. And in the distance you will see a 5 foot stingray occasionally jump in the air for fun. I usually fish the third or four bridge next to the clam factory. Alot of reds there but alot of trash too, get hung up alot...Haven't been there lately because of all the catfish but with that cold weather this past month I'm hoping all of them died ;D

Hahaha........i know of the bridge your talkin about.Looks like it has eatin many a tackle box.Never tried there for that reason.Hell, you could lose top water plugs there!Never seen any poons at the main pier.Caught about a 4 ft gar there one night.Suprised the sh1t outa me.Had a pelican steal a good size sea trout there also.Took it right out the bucket with bout 25 foot of stringer attached.Wonder if the bird man still hangs out there.

haha i had a rod fall in once when it was the old pier, pelican flew past the line. Sad to say but that old man passed away a couple years ago. I might try out cedar key tomorrow if it doesn't rain too hard. you say 9th pylon from the left? so are you right in front of it or inbetween 9 and 10? I really don't have a good idea on that pier but im sure I can figure it out. I guess floating live shrimp at the right depth will pay off.

When your at the end of the pier facing the bridge the 9th one should be at 1 o'clock maybe 2 o'clock.you will have to fish bottom. If you got gear to cast a float rig that far i'll buy all of it!When your lookin at that piling the drop off starts about 4-5 feet to the right of it.If you got somthin that you can throw 2-3 oz of lead with a 4-5 inch bait out some of them good sized reds should find it.I've seen more over slot fish caught than keepers from there.Have you ever done any good at the next bridge?

went there today, got small nibbles but didn't actually hook anything. It was just too cold for any fish to be out. I have to tell you I wish I brought my surf rod because maybe I could nail that area on a calm day. just too windy and wrong tide to get it. I guess you could float something if the wind and tide were blowing in that direction given that fish are even there that day. Didn't really see anybody fishing in town but me. was only there for a few hours though.
