Went out Sunday (yesterday) and even though it was cool and overcast, it was a pleasant day for fishing on the North Pier. No wind. Almost no waves. The bait was plentiful, believe it or not. We used pieces of live shrimp and frozen squid and caught a pinfish on nearly every cast. Even greenbacks were present and were caught from time to time.
Unfortunately, the gamefish were few and far between. We caught nothing larger than a 10-inch pinfish on some squid while fishing for bait. I fished the bottom with cut pinfish filets for 3 hours and didn't get even one hit. Just lots of small stuff picking away at my bait.
The pelicans were a major problem, chasing every pin we reeled in and getting tangled in our lines.
The best catch I saw were 2 young boys with a pair of spanish mackerel, which was a surprising catch. Also saw a man bring in what looked like perhaps a 1/2 pound pin.
One of our group caught a very small grouper (6 inches) on shrimp. But mostly it was a slow day for the big game. Really shocking considering the calm conditions!

Outgoing tide on the nsp free line with a big pin has been producing some nice grouper. Only problem is the birds but the fish are here. If you know some good numbers on the pier to fish you should land a keeper.

Yeah BigMike..whats up with the pelicans? Worst I have ever seen it. Many may have migrated here for the season I guess.

I guess the bait is down deep this time of year due to the colder water so they are hungry and with no food on top they will go for anything that they can eat.

Thats on the east side from N Carolina to Monroe county(Fl Keys), those folks down there are catching hell. On a bright side if you have grouper in the freezer it would be a great time to put it up for sale in the Keys, last price I saw was the upper $20 a Lb. and it will only go higher as the season closes in the Gulf come March N April.

You guys think this will push the commercial guys down there to relocate up this way and start harvesting our area to ship back down?
