Ok so I thought I had all my bases covered today, switched to 70 lb steel leader, cuz the 80 pound mono couldnt handle them last weekend. Also got another package of short shank hooks, but I figured bronze would do better since they are less flashy.
Get hooked up shortley after ariving, hooks straightens out in under 10 seconds....
Did see a guy with a 25 in gag tho he had caught before I arrived. Im sure it was some type of grouper, maybe a jew but who knows. Just be warned dont use those piece of ish hooks.
Oh well I got all weekend, water is still really dirty tho at least in shore

what kind of hooks are they (would like to know so I can stay clear)? I mainly use Owner, Or steel mustads in size 5/0-10/0 for grouper. Depending on how active they are and water clarity. But I have used Bronze hooks before and never had a problem, if I remember right they were mustad live bait hooks.

You got to be using thin wire hooks. Bronze dosent effect strength that much, its the thickness. if your using bass worm hooks, you aint got a chance in hell of landing a grouper. I have never seen a circle hook of any kind straighten, seen em break , usually while trying to get it out of the fish's mouth.
Gamakatsu, owners, mustad bronse 5/0 on up are all strong as hell.
cant put a freshwater hook meant for 15 lb test on 80 lb anything.
your only as strong as the weakest link.

When are people going to realize they pander to the rich. Middle and lower class people dont matter to them. They use religion and anti abortion to keep them voting for them. In my opinion no one should have more than several million dollars, anything more than that is hoarding to the detriment of the rest of us. At least mccain didnt win so he can have time to figure out how many houses he owns and continue to be anti health care reform while being the biggest collector of medical insurance lobby money. Sorry sorry, been in a pissed off mood all week and Im taking no prisoners. "Im about to break" Lynkon Park. Yep, what they said Mr. Socialist.

I've caught more big fat Skyway Groupers than I can remember on bronze Mustad 52761's. They need to be sharpened, but work just as well in my opinion as the more expensive models. (Although I'm a big Gamu/Owner fan when I can afford em.) Steel leader for Grouper? are you kidding? GTFOH! lol Did I miss something? Is this the Skyway Piers forum or the Pinellas County Tourons association Message Center? lol J/K Ah well to each his own, but you better not let me find none of my babies with fricken Stainless hooks in their jaw and a steel leader trailing behind them cuz you went bear hunting with a switch! LOL 80-100# Braid/ 80-100# Flouro or Mono leader 8-10/0 Quality Extra Strength hook. Quality Med-Heavy 8 foot stik Quality 3 or 4/0 conventional reel (preferably high speed) No problem Don't believe me? Refer to Capt. Jack's (Filetnrelease) post. (Nice goin Capt. by the way) ("When in Rome do like the Romans") And in my opinion we should keep the political bullcrap off the board! (or at least post it in "off topic") Carry On- Best of luck- And enjoy a beautiful weekend on the water! P.S. This is a good time of year when the water is dirty to switch to frozen Sardines on the bottom. (Or some other smelly dead bait like Ladyfish or Grunt Heads) It's hard for the Grouper to locate Livies in the dirty water, but they'll still feed and their noses work just fine. Have torn em up on Dines in November, December, January before when the fronts blow in. (It helps to brine Them) Good Luck everyone Great weather coming this week! Fish On!

Sorry bout the political rant, just gets to me sometimes. But I was using 80 pound mono and that got cut 5 times last week. I only have bout 5 feet of space where I dig the groups out of between piling, even less in some areas. and its only like 8-10 feet of water, maybe less But it was a bronze short shank that stretched open, and it didnt seem like I had that much pressure on the fish. And they have to be small if there is hardly any bit of the hook not disguised in the fish filet they wont touch it but i never had a stainless steel short shank bend even a little on me. As for the weekend. Sat caught a 3 pound and an 8 pound black drum havent filetted it yet, I gutted it and am going to do that tonite. Should still be good right? Also since I couldnt get a grouper this weekend I decided to stick around for the charter boats and steel the cheeks off of their grouper heads, got about a dozen of them I plan on scampying up. Also told the the necks are awsome to and are easy to pick clean like a chicken breast once cooked. One of the boat hands had dibs on those tho I lost only 1 other big bite someone saw the fish and said it was big and flash so I am guessing a snook. Grouper arent that shiny. My girl lost a big hit, her first grouper hit probably and was surprised how strong it was and didnt set the hook and pulled her shoulder out a bit. Big flounder are still running but since the monster I let fall off the hook in may I havent been able to catch but one that was barely keeper size which I gave away. Next week I my englewood trip and time to slay the snook and whatever else I can find but the snook are a def. Hopefully I can get my girl on some snook, thinking bout hooking her up with circles cuz she cant seem to set the hook on big fish. Sorry for the long update, but ifn you aint getting out fishing right now you are missing out...ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! sucks the days are so short Here is the satelite photo to the place in englewood, as you can see there is beach on ones side that gets loaded with sharks teeth and has good runs of fish quite a bit and docks on the other side and its the last property on the key, so at nite take a stroll with my girl down the beach and do it from here to eternity style under the stars maps.google.com/maps?source=ig&hl=en&q=985+Gulf+Blvd,+englewood,+fl&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=985+Gulf+Blvd,+Englewood,+Charlotte,+Florida+34223&gl=us&ei=vnIBS8vZEZTEnges6oiRCw&ved=0CAgQ8gEwAA&ll=26.912929,-82.353135&spn=0.002243,0.003439&t=h&z=18
