Most shellfish turn red or pink in the case of shrimp when steamed or boiled. Blues are good but a lot of work to eat. Stonecrab is great and a lot easier to handle. Painter

Actually the blues are getting easier, Really all you get from them are the claws and claw arms and a big hunk of meat behind the swimming flipper. Next time tho I am going to look online and see if I cant find some techniques, remember when I was younger seeing a news article where these ladys could clean those like no ones biz.
But I crack them the same way as the stonies, just smack the claws with the back of a butter knife till it cracks open, I dont even have a shell cracker

if ya twist and pull , you can get the legs off with the meat still on the end. and never have to open the body. its kinda gross in there

Trick to blue claw crabs is clean em first... When you get home grab em by the backfin and the top shell at the pointy corner and pop em off run water over them clean out goo,and the deadman lung. sprinkle generously with old bay and steam em in beer. Yall are missing some good meat if your just pulling legs and claws.
