I made it out to the SSP on Thursday afternoon 5p-730pm, but with that cold front, the bait was gone. I saw one short get pulled up but that was about it. I had my grouper rod out about 30-35 yards with a dead finger mullet (6inches) and I hooked something that I wasn't able to slow down whatsoever. Just took off left to right and I tried to follow but whatever it was, it was too big. I had 65# braid and 50# mono leader. Broke the leader eventually. I had not seen any dolphins around and too slow to be a tarpon so I'm guessing huge ray or something. Anyway, I may be able to get out today from about 5pm to dark to fish that outgoing tide. Hopefully the bait is back!

Ok so I made it out at about 5pm and no bait again. Probably the worst day I've ever had at the skyway. I even had trouble catching a pinfish for my grouper rig.... Needless to say, no bites whatsoever. I was gonna look for Trucky to get some tips as he said he may be out there at 155 or something but I have no idea what that is so I couldn't even do that. lol. Oh well. I did see that someone did well in the morning on the NSP with trout and Mangos. Way to go!
I also saw a boat that was trying to land a tarpon. They had it next to the boat 3 or 4 times and finally, the friend that was trying to grab it leaned just a little to far over the edge and SPLASH! In he went! He managed to get right back in the boat but talk about funny to see. I definitely did not expect to see that.
Tight lines all!

Linttrap. what Trucky was talking about 155 is the numbers on the gulf side of the pier. there are numbers from the beginning to the end on the concrete post. 155 is down past the last restroom

OK that makes sense, thanks. I'll look for those next time I get out there. Still trying to get the hang of these piers.

Went to the NSP around 4:30 am to get some bait. ( head out on co-workers boat around 7:00 so I thought I try the peir for some whitebait). There were greenies everwhere. ZFilled a cooler with 40 in about an hour using a sabiki. All bait were three to five inches. Got a couple big ones. THrew the cast net a few times but the baits were small. Gilled about half. So there was bait around. Just had to work at getting it.
I have a question for you.
Loaded my cooler, added a bunch of fresh water, added an air pump ( cheap on from walmart) and headed over to the tampa side to go out on a boat. After the 20 minute drive all the bait was dead.
How would you recommend transporting bait and keep it alive?

Round bin, high power pump,. keep em cool. soda bottles filled with water and frozen work great.

Also if it was threadfins that you had caught those dont last to well. The best bait for staying alive are those big eyed pilchards.
Keep em cool is another, i read somewhere that the oxygen content in the water is related to the temp, so if it gets hot it holds less air
Another is you cant put to many in a bucket, especially wiht the lower brand areators, just cant breathe out the amonia quick enough, if you start to see them dieing , get rid of the dead ones and put new water in there
Some say to use a round container, however I have seen people get it to work with rectangular coolers but those guys usually have some sort of customer areator that pumps the water

I have a round laundry tub ($7 @ walmart) and a pump that has a hose and suction cups so you can use it on all different things ($30 @ walmart). I extended the power cord so that I can have it hooked up to the truck battery while it is sitting in the bed of the truck. That way I can drive around with 'em. It pumps hard enough to really support a lot of bait. Don't forget to keep em cool with those frozen bottles, works like a charm.
No worries, these threads are for all! I'm here to learn from the masters!
