Hey guys,
I am taking my new Kayak for a shake down fishing trip around Weedon Island, but im already planning a camping weekend for Ft. Desoto, once fall (actually) kicks in temprature wise.
I've heard some great things about fishing around Egmont, and i know there are quite a few areas that would provide shelter from wind/waves for a Kayaker. Anyone have any experiences to share of fishing around or near Egmont.
Grass flats? Grouper Holes? Any threats or dangers to a Kayaker (AKA active shark populations, etc)
Before I go I wanna be in the know, dont want to put my Kayak in somewhere and end up being dinner for the Sharkies...
thanks,
Jason

Kayaking with sharks does not pose a threat unless you have bait or fish hanging over the side of the Kayak I use a 8 ft Emotion Spitfire Kayak to paddle out shark bait from the beach all the time. If you are worried about catching a fish and it being at boat side and a shark comming grabbing it get a Boga grip or something similar I think Berkley makes one that is like a foot long that way your hand is not on the fish if a shark does come after it. I know of many people that paddle with Sharks all the time and catch them from there Kayaks. Just use commom sense when Kayaking with sharks and you should be just fine. Cant wait to hear how you do on your first trip out.

Thanks for the feedback james. I just wanted to pose the question, because i heard from an eye witness fishing buddy of mine about a local guide who is known for Tarpon fishing near the Howard Franklin losing most of his hand and getting chopped up to his elbow by a bull shark while he was releasing a tarpon from a full sized boat. That was about 2 weeks ago now...give or take.
I just dont want to become Shark bait.

your going to want to postpone that trip to Weedon Island, For the past couple weeks the red time has infiltrated that shallow water up in and around the mangroves, it took me about 2 minutes of going through that water to lose a couple hundred scaled sardines.......my shoulder did not appreciate that at all.

Sorry, but did you say red tide up in weedon island? Or is the water just really dirty from all the rain run-off?

well it was red, and it was nasty with nothing living visible anywhere, yea, id say some of that last red tide we had a few weeks ago up in upper tampa bay moved down a bit

Hey,
I haven't done Egemont yet, but I'm planning on it once the water cools down a little bit more, maybe to 78 degrees.
The king macks run like crazy out there at the mouth of the channel.
In a little while, I'll be making my trip out there. Will be trolling the channel buoys. Will probably go out maybe 2 miles or so and work my way back along the channel trolling for kingfish. If I don't have much luck, I will be anchoring off a shipwreck of Egemont key in about 90 feet of water to try and get on some grouper.
I would be careful though. Big boats. Deep water. Strong currents. Storms seem to always pop up. It is dangerous but make sure you have a PFD and a whistle and some flares just in case. I would not be worried about sharks, they won't harm you. Just DONT USE A STRINGER.
Anyways all I d is kayak fish and I've always made sure to be safe.
Good luck.
And if you ever need a fihsing buddy, lemme know.
