Hey guys, sorry I haven't responded, but my father in law passed away on Friday. Have been fielding and making alot of phone calls the last couple of days. My wife is O.K. Been preparing for this for a while. Anyway, yes those are skipjacks. In Hawaii they call them Otaru tuna. They were about 12-15 lbs. Fun to catch. Fortunately they were caught on stand-up gear. The Ono, (Wahoo) was about 30 lbs. Yum!!!! Guess what I had for dinner that night?!! I wound up giving the rest of the filets to the staff that worked at where I was staying, (abouth 15 lbs of filets). Gave the skippies to a local homeless person at the marina. I also had a run on a Marlin, about 200-250 lbs. Got off after about 50 yrd run. He jumped once, and spit the bait. The coolest part of the trip was the Yellowfin tuna. I was reeling in a skippy when all of a sudden, he goes air-born about 30 ft. from the boat. Watched a 150-200 lb. Yellowfin eat it like a piece of candy. Had him on for about 30 seconds, then see ya, outa here. The Yellowfin was what I really wanted to catch, but it was so cool to see this happen. The Captain of the boat was goin' nuts. We circled back around and actually got the tuna to hit again but after a short run, it came off. It's just so cool that you can catch these type of fish so close to shore. The Wahoo was landed about 500 yards from shore. The tuna , skippies, and Marlin, within 1 mile. One other cool thing, got to see a Manta ray just swimming around. Man, those things are huge. Easily 12-15 ft across. I would love to dive with them. Just an awesome animal. So anyway, that was my trip. Had a blast. If anybody out there is going to be in Kona, Captain Jeff Rodgers is the man. The boat I chartered was the "Aloha Kai". He will get you fish. Hey Mario, thanks for posting the pics. Did you make it out to the SSP today? I was just not up to it. I won't make it out there Tuesday cause we have to go to my father in laws place to sort through his stuff. I should be out there next Sunday.

hey chris, yeah me and my dad made it down. he hooked about a 80 lb tarpon, got it to the pier, had it on its side and broke the line for the relese. it took him from 166 to 136 back up to 143 for the release. took about 25 minutes for that fight. all that on 17lb mono on what was goin to be our sabiki rig but he put a tarpon rig on. the water felt like it cooled down big time. the pin fish r starting to get huge, 8 and 9 inch pins. the sardines r back to. no snapper, no grouper, 1 trout. a couple strikes on the mack rigs but we had the wrong tide all day. my dad met polkcopierfisher... i think thats how u spell it. sorry he couldnt shake ur hand but he was busy with the tarpon.
