hello all, Its been a while since ive been on here but since the fishing is sooooooo good right now i had to see how everyone else was doing. Been going out at night 2-3 times a week and fishing almost every sat/sun for the past 2 months. A lot of my fishing lately has been around Weedon Island and the residential canalsin Saint pete at night. Plenty of bait at Weedon island still, though the fry baits are starting to take over, they will eventually make their way to your chum line sponsored by purina tropical fish food if u get it going for a good 10 mins. 1/4 net is needed. Tons of redfish all over Weedon island on low tide in the deeper water, but you need to wade to them, they are extremely boat shy! and apparently know my casting range. some snook in the mangroves during the day and trout all day long with the redfish, but tend to stay in the deeper outer edges of the flats(4-6 feet). Night fishing has definately been the highlight. 7 straight trips with both my fishing partner Dave and I both getting our inshore slams. Monsters are surrounding several docks lights near the point just across from the Southern point of weedon island. Weve been catching some records for ourselves this year including several trout over 25", a couple high 30" snook and some nice reds up to 40" as well. Ive never seen reds this big back in the residential canals but they have been roaming the underwater dock lights with the snook. I will try to get some good pics for you guys in the next couple of days but several of these docks are holding, 40 or 50 snook, ALL visible. Fishing has been outstanding!!!!!!! last nighs cooler ended up with 2 snook( only bc there was only 2 on the boat) same as reds, 2 reds, 10 snapper, all between 12-14" and 3 trout. Good fishing all!

Jack,
Just wanted to say howdy. Came across your thread here. Do you guys night fish in a boat or a Kayak around the Weedon area.
I am planning to do some Yak fishing, and was wondering if you could give me some pointers on good places to check out. If you'd like to keep that info a little more private, feel free to send me a personal message. Just looking for some good starter spots.
Thanks,
Jason

theres a handful of us that fish out there at night and from what i see everyone usually does good- on any given night theres 2 or 3 boats targeting around 100 docks. If you see a dock with lights, either the underwater lights or above water lights, chance are its going to hold snook- well no, i lied, sometimes ive come up on a light fish it for 5 minutes just to realize if been throwing a 5 inch greenback at 100 circling catfish. Thats going to be your first point. 1. identify the fish. Dock lights will either be holding catfish OR just Snook OR a combination of snook, snapper, trout, and redfish. most of those docks are holding snapper, trout and snook. the redfish are always moving around. 2. Make sure you have plenty of bait, and good bait, im not a huge fan of artificials but have caught them when bait ran out, but to make it worth your while, check the tides and get good bait. 3. Of course use flourocarbon leader and personally i use 2 rods-a 7 1/2ft with a 3000 spinner with 20lb braid, 20 lb flouro and an owner size 1 all purpose bait hook. my 2nd option is when the bruisers come out, break me off. then i bring out the medium heavy redbone rod with a 4000 spinner, 30lb braid and 30lb flouro leader, again with a owner size 1 All purpose bait hook. 4. be quiet, dont talk, dont shine lights, if your dipping dont spit in the water, dont have a radio, dont call your g/f or mother. 5. be courtoues of dock owners, see above, normal people are sleeping while were slaying snook. If you get your line caught on something, a boat, dockline, the dock, a small child- take the time to get your gear back, leave it as you found it and move on to a new dock beacuase at this point the fish arent going to eat. 6. dont cast into the light, atleast not on your approach cast, cast into the edges of the light and let it drift backwards into the light, or if the light is close to the seawall, i like to, depending on the backyard status of course, just lob it on the lawn, and bring the bait back and just let it barely drop against the wall, the bait is stunned, swims in circles, and the snook cant resist a dumb greenback. this is all of course my personal experience and out of close to 50 trip in the past year, ive never been skunked, a couple nights i had to count snapper or trout

thanks for the info! Ive never been to weedon island.. i think imma go out there sometime soon...
If we have some time and wanna stay local we go to ballast point.. main reason being is that theres always some kind of action.. catfish, little sharks, trout.... and its not too far from where i live (carrollwood)
But weedon island.. is that place similar to ballast point? theres docks i take it? you can just walk up at night and fish off peoples docks? is there a pier at all?
any info would be great..

Buzz,
there is a dock, but, unless the tide is really moving, i try not to stay on it. Better fishing can be found in the area for wading. (That is the only dock i know of...no other public docks, and i would highly advise against accessing someone else's dock since its private property (not to mention most have dogs.)
I like the area, love the piers, but...for me...the closer to home i can be...the better. Hey by the way...I also live in carrollwood. Tight lines.

Locally for me would be Weedon, Upper Tampa Bay, Double Branch Creek...
Now that i have a Kayak though, i will be able to expand my local reach, which im excited about. Im putting it in the water for the first time on Sunday, and planning on fishing the full moon weekend coming up the beginning of Oct.
Ive actually never freshwater fished, mainly because my folks spoiled me and i got to grow up around a 32' fishing beast.
Im tempted to goof off in Lake Magdeline just to see what happens now that i have a Yak. The only time i do any freshwater toying is when i go up to GA (Lake Chatuge Area) when we go up to our cabin to just get away, trout farms, and the likes.
I hear crappy is pretty good for a pan fried fish, wouldnt mind giving that a whirl sometime. Like i said, now that i have my Kayak, i can open up my fishing avenues again. Unfortunately, the 32' beast is in the hospital being outfit with two new engines...
