I hooked a pelican once from a kayak and It liked to beat me up, on a top water plug, never again, They wanted it all, they can have it. Tie the rod to the railing, notify them and go back fishing. Not worth getting hooked, They are not paying the doctor bill.

Not asking you to leave carl, just trying to understand your stance on things....you downplayed the Piney Point incident, you support dredging in the bay, and now you seem to be 100% supportive of the new pier rules Never said I was 100% supportive of the new rules, in fact I commented against them to FWC. My position is that FWC came up with a solution that placates the FOP without being overly restrictive against fishermen. Like I said, coulda been a whole lot worse. I won't address the other two issues here.

Well I went ahead with the pelican course and admit I was tempted to abandon the process once I saw how slow it was moving. It's not easy to navigate, and I was guessing on how to get it started. What caught my attention most was the instruction to always have the certificate with you if fishing the piers which to me indicates we will not be checked at the booths and will be random checked only, just a guess, might be wrong. I don't anticipate many folks completing the course considering how confusing the webpage is

I AM GLAD YOU WENT AND DID THAT SHOTGUN. I WAS ENVISIONING ME PULLING UP TO THE GATE AND SEEING THE CLERK AND SOMEONE SCRAPPING ON THE GROUND AT THE ENTRANCE AS YOU TRIED TO STAND YOUR GROUND AND THE OLD LADY TAKING THE MONEY EXITED THE SHACK AND ATTEMPTED TO HANDCUFF YOU. WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN A PRETTY SITE. CARRY ON.

LOL! I like your humor fishhead, and I will confess I've pulled up to the booth several times and found the old codger sound asleep with the window locked. First time that happened I tried to wake him, but he didn't budge so I drove on. Times after that I just checked him, said nothing and went fishing. I have no shame

THE LADY AT THE NSP ACTED LIKE WE WERE BOTHERING HER AND THE LADY AT THE SSP WAS WILLING TO GIVE ME HER RENDITION OF THE LATEST FISHING REPORT AS SHE KNEW IT. SHOULD BE ABLE TO BUY A YEARLY PASS FOR A SET FEE AND JUST FLASH A CARD AT THE GATE AND DRIVE IN. MAYBE FOR 100 BUCKS FOR THOSE WHO FREQUENT THE PIER MORE THAN MYSELF.

That won't work, I drove to Little Manatee state park and bought a state park pass but it only gave me a discount at the pier, still had to pay some money. It's the only state park in Fl that will charge you to get in even with a park pass

requiring anglers to take a course to be allowed to fish on skyway just means that I will be fishing elsewhere, ponce inlet, sebastian inlet here I come.... what a s*tupid cow towing to the bird 'karen's". been fishing piers on east coast since mid 80's and the number of birds that have i have seen flying away with broken line I can count on one hand with two fingers missing. the vast majority of hooked birds (pelicans, seagulls, ospreys were reeled in to pier/jetty, a towel thrown over them and after grabbing beak, given a full inspection then removal of any hook or line and off they go. Don't see how they're going to enforce this new policy unless they bring in a swat team. the first weekend crush will be telling. if they will be denying entry to all that do not have the completion form, they may as well close the pier.

Working on this slow FWC fishing course while catching up on emails. Alot of the info is rather useless...i.e. tying down your fishing rod. Will update my message later.
The update: Course took about 45 minutes with numerous videos. The 10 question test was very easy. Could have passed without the material. Got my certificate...cap and gown time...LOL.

Just took the course and the test. Here are some personal observations. #1 Totally not needed. The material in the course is for people who have no common sense when it comes to fishing, those who do could pass the test, if allowed, with out having to sit thru the video. #2 Any fisherpeople who are not computer savy will have a very hard time taking it, especially if all they have is a smart phone. #3 The tourists are not going to bother with it, when they can have access to Ft. Desoto just down the road. I took it, just to say that I did, BUT how much I'll use my certificate will be seen!

There's an article on Baynews9.com about the new pier rules with 2 interviews with guys that fish out there, one said he likes it, the other said they gotta catch me first and that's just how I feel I just noticed some similarities between the two courses offered for shark fishing from shore and pelican hookups, they are both incredibly boring and lack any common sense, Who in their right mind would chum from shore while beach fishing for sharks? Both courses are formatted the same way and way too long, I don't need to know all 27 species of sharks, just the ones I'm trying to catch, if you don't recognize it , let it go. The people in charge at FWC who makes these decisions need to be examined for signs of working brain matter. I worked for 21 years in local govt. before I retired and they brought in a outside source to do the hiring. It was a total cluster F up, It bypassed the person who had been doing the same job for years for someone off the street that could interview better but had no working skills for leadership positions. The department I worked for now has 40 % less people and top seniority is maybe 14 years instead of 30. Turnover is unreal. I will get off my soapbox now, I relinquish my chair to another frustrated angler.

Guess they figured the end was too far to swim back. Just sux to have to jump through hoops to pursue your sport. We had a few peeps that dared to sail off into the blue many moons ago because because you could get yer head chopped off for huntin the kings deer. Having a boot heel on your neck courtesy of the Karen's really smarts.
Tip: 30# braid is plenty strong enough to rip a smaller sized hook out of any pelican that gets entangled. Just saying.. the sharks might develop a taste for em.

I understand, Bridgeman --Just something blurting out in reasonable frustration. The point, however, is that folks here must not post that kind of thing -- even if most of us would never want to hurt a pelican if we can avoid it. The fact of the matter is that in 2 years, the rules and restrictions are scheduled to be reviewed. If the pelican prople can say that there are those who quote posts like that, they will be in strong position to demand that the restrictions should be more restrictive -- maybe even push for no fishing, or fishing that is so restrictive that almost all of us would not even want to bother fishing at the SSP. I believe that almost all here appreciate nature -- including pelicans and seabirds -- and that appreciation is why we love fishing. Almost all would do our best to not unnecessicarily hurt bird or fish. Lets show that in our responses and posts about any Skyway fishing rules, and if we do, we will be in the strongest position for our fishing to be reasonable managed and for it to give us the best chance for our interests to be considered and protected. BTW, I too hooked a couple of pelicas in the Miami area 50 or so years ago. I also hooked a few 10 - 15 years earlier from SE FL piers -- all, thankfully, with no serious damage to the birds.

Let it go man! Sorry if I offended you. Geez! I was trying to be charitable and understanding...giving you a break. Do you not understand that it is not about you, or what I wrote? A few more posts like that and the bird people could use them two years from now to show that fishing from the piers must shut down to all fishing. You did not offend me. You, hopefully, unintentionally, could have hurt all fishermen.
