For me it's all about tide selection, for snappers and sheepshead I like weak to just above tides, don't fish for gags much but if I did I would fish the same tides. If it's ripping only fish I'm after is macks, but only on a falling tide, ripping incoming tides are so strong I can't work my spoon properly, the current just overwhelms my spoon Completely agree about the tides. Can’t say that I ever landed anything great with the tides ripping, that’s usually when I just soak big cut baits for random monsters.

Well, from what you've posted you're restricted to one night a week which is better than once a month like some folks. All of us that have had jobs have been thru that. When I retired I went crazy and fished 3-4 times a week, lots of times at daybreak then again in the aft. Caught tons of macks but it was a bigger learning experience more than anything

Interesting posts. Like hearing stuff like that. Get me pumped for the next trip up there. Don't eat jacks, but real fun to catch. Going to take a closer look next visit. Thanks. Fishtailz I think you would have fun night fishing. Show up right before sunset, then as it gets dark fish the lights for ladyfish. You’ll see them blowing up on baits, they are very easy to catch and will hit just about anything infront of them when they are feeding, 10-12inchers freeline them out whole and just let them swim into the darkness.. trust me they won’t be out there for very long until something big finds them. I’ve hooked more giant tarpon like this than with any other bait, you will also experience some runs so crazy that they will leave you totally spooled in a split second just scratching your head wondering wtf just happened. The bigger ladyfish cut in half and fish on bottom for same results. You’ll get all those big bites from the sea monsters you’ve been looking for hahaha

Hour and a half drive to get there but love the skyway piers. Big fish available.

Stuckintherocks, I think you might be right. Ladyfish has always been my go to bait when I can get them. Fishing more for something big than something to eat. You are posting what I like to hear. Thanks. Making plans.

Awesome thread y'all! Appreciate hearing the tails and tips a bunch.
My son and I ended up going Thursday night and he caught one keeper Mangrove Snapper which he ate the next morning for breakfast. 😀

What bait were y’all using ?? Did you break out your 209s? I have quite a few in the garage myself that I’ve been planning on cleaning up and bringing out…

What bait were y’all using ?? Did you break out your 209s? I have quite a few in the garage myself that I’ve been planning on cleaning up and bringing out… We did use the 209s. He used a little spinning setup (for ease of use for him) and I threw out the 209 on an Ugly Stick Tiger rod with a fish finder rig and a greenback I grabbed in the throw net. The one mangrove was all we caught and he got bored of no action but it was well worth it.

In the pic of the kid w/ the snapper, you can see all those cars in the background lined up. Damn. Is that common for the night time at the skyway? And is it really better to fish out by the rock piles than not?

I noticed all those cars as well, that's the north pier, might be normal for a Thursday night, I don't fish that pier. I prefer to fish the pilings for snappers

It was pretty packed when we first got there about 9pm. By midnight it was clearing out.
I'm coming from the north side it only made sense to fish it. May try the south pier next time.
Based on the threads I've found on here I think we were near a rock pile but between my son keeping me busy with catching bait and baiting his hook I never really got a chance to see if I could feel any rocks out there or get hung up.

I heard many people talk on here about the north side being better for crabbing at night. Even saying that you might see some family members fighting with each other over missing a crab. lol Did you see a lot of people out there crabbing with long nets?
