Anglers are catching Macks at the Piers and Many Small Kings are in the Mix.

Been there done that, yep, be careful. Can happen even to experienced pier fishermen: bite gets hot and you're tossing macs in the cooler. Get home and discover baby kings mixed in. Can be a very expensive oops.

Once you pull it out of the water and it doesn't stop moving.. it's a baby king.. double check it.

Once you pull it out of the water and it doesn't stop moving.. it's a baby king.. double check it. I & others that have been with Me have even had a few encounters with catching Baby Kings. Yes Tears is Totally Correct; If You bring up what You think is a Mack and it refuses to stop moving then throw it Back because it is a King. The Juvenile Kings(12" - 18") are the worse in moving around. Don't Get Caught With Them !You could get Heavily Fined & Possibly Lose Your Gear if You Disobey the Law. I have seen it happen. Tight Lines Everyone !

Sometimes Spanish will still move out of the water, just not as common as a king. Gotta check those lateral lines

I see it happen way too many times....people mistaking small kings for Spanish. I can tell by color even before they leave the water. They have a slight brownish tint. Even when they flip a mack I can see the telltale tint without checking lateral line. I wish FWC would check more often... that's a lot of undersized Kings throughout a year.
Hope you guys are doing well. Naples has been very slow for the last 3-4 months for any consistency. Besides a few days of thick bluefish or pompano.

I find the easiest way to tell Sp. Mack from a King Mack is the black dorsal fin on the Spanish.
