You are Correct. I looked it up. I was sent the Picture from a Message that it was a Black Grouper. I just found the Link that shows the Pic. My source was wrong.

So you are telling us that you really do not know for sure if the mackS (plural) are there...just that if any are there, they oare most likely there in the early morning or evening. That does not help much for someone like me to decide if it is worth going to the SSP. I urge anyone with real, not just hearsay, information to report it here (and please indicate the time & location of the catch). As for the tides, if the report gives the time, the tide can be determined by referring to tide tables/charts. However, I strongly suggest that instead of using tide charts, use the the NOAA Skyway Currents information. As has been discussed here many times, the time of lack current or current direction change can be up to almost a two hours different from the tide level. tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/ports/ports.html?id=t01010 repots the current speed and direction with instruments right at the skyway -- it is not necessary to add or subtract time, as is the case when using other stations. Plus, mackerel (and most other fish) really do not care about the height of the tide...what they respond to is the current, so what is most important to fishing is to know when the slack occurs and the direction (in or out) and speed of the current (both shown by the NOAA site) during the time you are going to or have been fishing.

I believe My Sources out at the Pier. Most of them are Good Friends of Mine. Since I do not know You & I cannot tell You who they are. As for the Tide Tables, You use what Tide Tables that You want & what Tide Tables You want to use. No Arm Twisting on My Part. I use the Tide Tables that I & many others use where ever We go Fishing because It works for Me. No Tide Table is going to tell You where to catch the Fish & the Time that You will catch them. It only shows the Best Time to Catch Fish. As for the Location of catching the Fish, I have shown people where I catch them when I am out there. I might reel in a few but others may not. It has happened many times. It is Just Luck. Like this past weekend, I went Fishing & caught 2 - 12" catfish & 2 Small Snappers & missed quite a few up in Hudson. Other people told us there were No Fish in those waters. We proved them otherwise. I used the Tide Chart I suggested & it worked for Me up there. The other person that was with Me caught quite of few Small Snappers & 1 over 11". We both used different baits & methods to catch them. He used Free-Lined shrimp & I used Squid, Cut Bait & Cut Up Sardines. It's all in the Presentation of Your Bait. We both had a Good Time ! There have been many times I will reel in the Macks & others around me catches nothing. I cannot do anything about that. I am not going Bait Your Hook & tell You exactly where & when to Fish or what Tide Table to use. That is up to You ! I can only give You an Idea where, when & how I catch Fish. For example & for the last time, I usually catch Macks just before Sunrise & just before Sunset using either a Spoon or Free-Lining a Greenback or use a McDonald Straw. It works for Me. You need find what way & time that suits You in catching Fish. Like I keep saying, Fishing is Just Luck !

Tide tables are fine, and are the only thing that can be used for places other than the Skyway. As for your Hudson experience, 2 catfish and a couple of small snappers IS pretty close to NO FISH. That "catch" can be made almost anywhere and at any tide if one is willing to buy live shrimp and squid and fish it with reasonable terminal tackle.
Nobody is asking you to bait their hook. I just thought that with you calling yourself the Mackerelman, you could provide more insight than just dawn and dusk. If you know more than that, I guess you are just not willing to share it with others....like you are afraid that they would catch THE mackerel that you would have caught if you had not told them where or when or what tide to catch it.
I would always be willing to share my results, because I have thought that this was mostly what this forum is about...fishing on the Skyway Piers. Maybe I am wrong about that. Maybe it really is just a social networking site ...like Facebook friends to chat on.

Experience is also a big part of fishing, the apps and tide charts are suggestions and are not always exact. To be consistent and successful, you need to learn how to "read" conditions, Is it cloudy, how clean is the water, is bait high or low, how big is the bait, any storms in the Gulf ?? You will never catch a fish reading the internet, the more time you spend out there will equal more experience and more fish !!!

This is supposed to be fun not a burden of reporting details in infinitum, take what ever info people like to share and do with it what you can, even if someone reported thousands of macs at the bridge doesn't mean they won't be gone when you get there.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how to use the new Google ocean mapping ? Last time offshore we we seen it, unmanned with large neon Orange sails, our Caption said they are mapping the Oceans and Gulf floors. Anyone know how to find it ?

Fella you are literally ZERO for 24 on posts so far you have managed to alienate groups of fisherman as a whole, Demand to know exactly where people are fishing, times and tides and still cast doubt on people that are willing to share tips and tackle . no one is obligated to tell you what they have learned by putting the time in, which you do not want to do, Put in the time and figure it out or take up a new hobby.

One morning before Dawn I took a Proboards Guy Fishing with Me to the Piers to catch Macks because he Accused Me of BSing him about catching Macks. I showed him where I Fish at. I showed him how to set up his spoon. I showed him how to Cast. I then caught a Mack. I told him to try it. He reeled in and got tangled up on a Column. In the mean time I caught 2 Macks while he was trying to unhook off the column. He cast his line out again. His Cell Phone rang. I then caught another Mack while he was on his phone. I cast out again & caught another Mack. He then said that He needed to go take a leak. While he was gone I caught 2 more Macks. When he came back, he cast his line out & got cut off. He then said that he must have hit a rock. Fifteen minutes later he said that there weren't any more Macks to catch. He then said that he was going to go because he said that rain was coming. I cast My line out again & caught one more Mack. A Total of 8 Macks. I also was ready to go. Me - 8 Macks, him - 0 Macks. We then left. The Moral of the Story is: 1. Watch what a person shows you on catching Macks. 2. Watch out for the columns in the water. 3. Leave your Cell phone in your pocket or in your car. 4. Do your business before you start Fishing. 5. A little cloud dosen't mean rain is coming. 6. You can take a person Fishing but that does not mean that the person is going to catch Fish. Below is a Picture of My Catch that day.

The days fishing for kings on the Gulf State Park pier where everyone around you is hooked up, even the tourists, and you can't even get a swipe.

I took 2 friends Grouper Fishing at the SS Skyway Pier. I set Her pole up & Her Husband drops the line in the water. All at one She catches a 32' Gag. We all fished for 4 more hours & No More Bites & No More Fish. Just Her Big Gag. And by the way, She had Never Fished Before.

Fishsci: First of all the charts you suggested I can not figure out. 2nd I like out going tide and figure to be ready to fish 2hrs after it says when slack high tide is, 3rd we fish because it's FUN! If you take it too serious you might as well stay home.

Can I call you out so I can catch more fish lol 😂 Yo, fishci guy, chill dude. I’ve been part of this board for a while. The skyway is for everyone of all sorts of skill level. And there is plenty of info if you spend 30 minutes searching through old reports and threads. It’s not the job of people like Mackerelman to give you everything you need without any work. Go fishing dude. If you want to get all the answers about mackerel, instead of just asking “what time will I catch ____” ask what to look for and why. I learnt so much just by asking what to look for and why to the point I don’t have to ask where and when. I listened to everyone on this site. And I know first hand how frustrating it is to not catch “something worthwhile”. If I’m just out chilling, give me some catfish or big grunts or anything. Fishing should be about escaping the rest of the world so I can relax. Don’t make it stressful.

I am sorry that I made so many of you mad. I guess I just did not know that so many of the members on this forum find fishing as a way to escape from having to think about anything and just wait for something good to happen. There is nothing wrong with that. A lot of people do that for other things -- like pumping quarters into a slot machine at Hard Rock, buying lottery tickets, or sitting in the grandstand and watching NASCAR.
On the other hand, almost all the really good fishermen I have known and fished with were, like me, constantly thinking about ways to know more about how to fish, including learning about tackle, techniques, effects of conditions (like tide, time, temperature, and locations), and the biology and behavior of fish. Those fishermen are almost always willing to share what they have learned with others (except exact location of "honey holes", or other information that could directly interfere with their own chances to catch fish). To me, and that kind of fishermen, the "fun" is as much or more about learning and improving our "game", than it is about having a lucky day where we fill the cooler with fish. For example, I would rather figure out how to catch a couple mackerel on a day when they are very finicky, hard to catch, and and very few are being caught -- than to mindlessly cast a spoon with a 3 oz. sinker and 15 ft leader a thousand times and catch a limit on a day when they are thick and hungry.
I had assumed that almost all fishermrn who go through the trouble to be members of a forum like this would be in the latter category (like to think about their fishing), but apparently I was wrong.
Again, if you like fishing because it allows you to not have to think about much of anything except when some fish gets on your line, that is understandable and fine. However, there is no need to attack people who fish for different reasons and who try to help other like-minded fishermen learn more.

Are you for real or you just messing around? You say you are sorry for making people mad and then proceed to hurl more subtle jabs with your leading assumptions. I don't believe anyone was mad, the theme was suggesting you take it easy and enjoy the pursuit of fishing as you seem to make your inquiries an interrogation for absolute facts, nobody likes to be interrogated.
Some examples, "members on this forum find fishing as a way to escape from having to think about anything", wow, that's a big leap. So because we are not like you we have empty minds and don't think.
"all the really good fishermen I have known and fished with were, like me, constantly thinking about ways to know more about how to fish, including learning about tackle, techniques, effects of conditions (like tide, time, temperature, and locations), and the biology and behavior of fish." So this implies we are not good fisherman, like you, as we don't think like you. Got it.
"to mindlessly cast a spoon", again we have no mind or thoughts, I suppose as you implied earlier we have empty minds. You could not be further from the truth.
"I had assumed that almost all fishermrn who go through the trouble to be members of a forum like this would be in the latter category (like to think about their fishing), but apparently I was wrong." Wow, you are wrong but about your perception of us mindless fisherman. Dude, there is tons of factual information on this forum, go explore the entire site's library of posts.
And the irony of it all, " there is no need to attack people who fish for different reasons", this needs no elaboration. Look in the mirror bro, who is doing the attacking? Nobody in this entire thread said anything negative about you or your reasons to fish yet you continue to insult the community with your subtle jabs, I'm beginning to think you don't even realize what you are doing, I believe it is called passive aggressive.
I'd suggest to improve your writing, don't post until you re-read what you have written to delete all the subtle jabs and belittling comments and you may find the community is willing to forget all this. I hold no grudge and would like nothing more than for you to improve your writing skills and read about your fishing successes.

I just come here to scan reports and learn more but I think fishsci misunderstood what everyone’s upset about. It’s more on the delivery of your requests that rubs people the wrong way. I think you can be cerebral about fishing AND enjoy it like others are saying. No one really owes someone anything in terms of relaying information regarding tide, weather, pressure, etc. If they choose to share then that’s amazing and will help future anglers, if not then that’s fine too. I live far from water so I try to do my due diligence before taking a 2-3 hour trip. Sometimes you just have to do a little work to figure out everything you’re looking for. If they’re posting pics then analyze the background, look at the shadows, w/e. There’s a wealth of information out there from the past too. I didn’t grow up fishing so I relied on methods like that to help me out. Just a random thought

fishsci: Speaking of the Honey Holes: Every Saltwater Place to Fish in the State of Florida is a Honey Hole. Saltwater Fishing sometimes is Good & sometimes I leave with nothing caught. I have no "Honey Hole" at the NS & SS Piers. Throughout the last 50 Years fishing at the Skyway, I have caught fish-(Large & Small) at the Piers with no particular place to fish at. Drop Yourself a Line in the water & Try Your Luck with No Guarantees. For example: I Fished the Skyway for years before the Bridge got hit & fell in. Sometimes the Fish were biting & sometimes the fish laughed at the hooks & bait. We All, get better at Fishing the more We Fish. But We have to get off our Butts & Go Fishing to catch anything. When most of Us go Fishing, sometimes We catch the Fish & sometimes the Fish Evades Us. It is All Luck & Fish Catching Timing. Many Times, I have Fished & Reported here on Proboards with Nothing Caught but still gave a Weather & Water Update. But I had a Good Time just getting out & getting My line wet & seeing friends & other Anglers. One thing that I do know & You can put on your Calendar; is that the after the Macks leave for the Winter & go South, they usually arrive back at the piers around Valentines Day. That is just the way it is. Snapper are here most of the Year. Sharks & Dolphins usually hang around & eat everything else.
Who would think that a McDonald Straw would catch Fish.

Speed bumps have been there quite awhile, not sure of date. They have gotten real serious about speeders out there since a young child was hit and died, posted at 5 mph now.
