Me and a buddy of mine are flying down from Virginia for a few days on June 3rd to do a little fishing. We primarily fish in the Outer Banks but thought we would change it up a little. Some of the posts in this forum are pretty disheartening. I have fished SSP and in and around Sarasota before with pretty good success. What I am reading now seems to be little to nothing on the skyways. I am also concerned about the red tide I am reading about. We will be staying in Sarasota. Should the fishing be good around Sarasota area at that time? It's hard to believe fishing is so bad this late in May in the bays and on the shores of Florida. Where are the spanish? Does anyone think it will get better as June approaches? We have a flight scheduled and we really want to come down. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

The piers are hit and miss, seems people are having better luck at Ft. DeSoto.

I was down the end of March and fished Ft Desoto Bay Pier and in a six hour period I saw at least 50 pompano caught. The spanish and ladyfish were thick as well. We had a blast that day. If the skyways do not pick up in the next couple of weeks, I will definitely visit Ft Desoto again. Thanks for the advice.

We haven't had any rain, it's not summer hot yet, seasons have been closed, and mackerel came through quick this year. There's a ton of bait holding around so the water is fine for now.
Snapper are there & biting. Gags will open June 1st and are there. Pompano are around. Trout and redfish will open too.
Tides, time of day, and fishing pressure are the biggest factors in success. Variety of bait can make a difference this time of year too. The fish didn't just disappear for no reason. Get creative in your tackle and technique. Try something different from everyone else.
You can fish the beach, passes & bridges around Sarasota too.

Sorry for the delayed response. Thank you for the information. We are gonna give it a shot later this week. It looks like occasional thunderstorms are in the forecast for most afternoons this week. We are coming in Thursday morning and will fish the piers, bridges, and surf for a couple days. We'll probably fish Ft Desoto Gulf Pier at some point. We'll have a full arsenal (pomp rigs, spoons, jigs, live shrimp, and hopefully a little live bait fish). We are just hoping not to get skunked. Thanks again!

Don't come here. If I was planning a trip I would go to Galveston

Went offshore last week for a night snapper trip on Hubbard's, got a limit of good size mango's and lane, several species are starting to spawn, should be good fishing for snapper in the bay also.

We ended up coming down and fishing Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday at various locations. We had a couple of hook ups on decent size spanish at Ft Desoto Bay Pier. We also ended up on the gulf pier only catching a couple of whiting. We did see a large Tarpon jump twice right in front of us which was pretty cool. Our most success was in and around Sarasota. I caught my first snook and permit ever at South Lido Beach Park at the pass. The snook were running close to shore in bunches and I was able to land a 24 incher right at dusk while jigging a goofy jig for anything that would eat it. We caught many small spadefish around the pylons on Saprito pier. Sarasota park produced nothing but blue runners, whiting, and hungry catfish on shrimp, fish bites and fish gum. We gave up there after 2 hours of fighting with cats. We could get very little to strike metal and we threw it all, diamonds, spoons, nylures, even gotchas and various MirrOlures with very little success. The bait was thick everywhere we went. Its hard to compete with that much bait in the water. All in all, wasn't a bad trip. We decided to stay away from skyway based on reports of slow fishing there. We had a blast and that's what matters.
