Mind if I ask where you guys were at? Been looking to get a king from up here. On a gulf pier. Not big on giving spots online. Too many people suddenly show up and it's crowded enough already. Find a pier from Clearwater south and hope for a little west wind to push clean water in. It was king green water when I got this one. She was delicious too. Cooked some fillets and smoked the rest.

How dare you. Jk I’m happy for you, I may be running far south south by Venice to find a pier that way since the water in consistently in the right temp, but that water color is important. From what I’ve seen, anywhere with 20ft of water at least, inshore wind and out going tide can produce. But the water color portion still vexes me a bit. Obviously green color means baitfish food which means baitfish which helps with Kings and mackerel in general. Now knowing where to find that is where I struggle. I used to love Anna Maria island for mackerel during the summer as a kid. But the city pier was supposed torn down. Big Sad

Venice pier has to be one of the worst piers the "gulf" side has to offer in terms of king fishing. Doesn't even reach 1000ft out and your barely dipping past the 2nd trough. Theirs a reason why that pier only gets less than 20 a year. If I ever wanted to king fish Id probably go to naples pier during the correct time of year to give my best shot. atleast you get further out. Fort desoto is the same. Your barely reaching the water to where they will come to find food within

Naples is a very far drive for me

Naples and the panhandle are the only piers worth fishing for kings on the gulf. All others don't have enough depth and you have to get lucky. You could go on a half day party boat and have a better chance than any of the other piers. Take an extra rod to flatline a sardine.

Northern Gulf piers catch kings from April to November. Panama City, Fort Walton, Navarra, Pensacola Beach and Gulf Shore. Gulf Shores was where i fished for 30 years, some days limits of kings were stupid easy. If you really want to catch kings from a pier, spend a long weekend up there in late spring or early fall. Lots of Spanish macs too.

Like carl, I grew up fishing PCB Pier. Saw days where 50 plus kings were caught and you had to be blind to not get hooked up. Sadly I've come to the realization I won't get that kind of fishery here on the piers atleast. Not saying that would ever happen again my lifetime but there is zero chance of it happening here. Over the last 6 month I've tried them all and won't waste my time trying again lol
