to me, there are bridges here in fla. that people fish off of that are more than 50 yrs old, and have more traffic on them every day than the ssp or nsp. do the right thing repair what has to be repaired, lord know the state spends money sometrimes on foolish things or rebuild the piers. most of the people fish the week ends on both piers. allow a certain no of cars on the week ends that will be safe in nos. not that many people fish during the week, that's the time that i fish the ssp less people etc. for once do something positive for the fisherman, mewyorker1

This is posted on Pierfish by Josh. He apparently has spoken to some of the Pier personnel. I wish BigMike would maybe shine some credibility to this statement. Anyway this is what was posted.
"Ok, so from what I am told by Jamie, the pier has been leased until 2020 inwhich they are supposed to make repairs so now the pier attorneys are getting involved. For now just let your voices be heard through this thread. I will try and get a form up on the site for the petition. We need to spread the word about this if you want your kids to be able to enjoy one of Florida's finest landmark"

This REALLY SUCKS, I have been starting to call the government reps from Monty's list and so far all have said the same thing, that they just heard about it yesterday..and that its due to lack of funding for repairs, but I have had positive responce to the suggestion that they still allow foot traffic on the closed sections only as an alternitive to closing those sides completely. at least this would give us some time to push for the money for the repairs needed to bring piers back up to the needed safety standards.I URGE YOU ALL TO CALL EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE REPS ON MONTYS LIST..THE MORE WE ARE HEARD, THE MORE CHANCE WE HAVE FOR A COMPROMISE!!!!!!!!! DONT WAIT FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO CALL GET OFF YOUR ASSES AND CALL NOW!!!!!!!!

You know i dont fish out there to regularly, but i second the crossover idea, its seems a far compromise. Definately less wear and tear
and would only be a kind of rude reminder to just be sitting there staring at you the whole time seeing the fish gathered just on the far side of it (which you know they will be).
Kinda unfair that there aint any kind of forum for the community to be consulted on this sort thing

I think that mabey the closing of the original skyway massage board was the beggining of this mess. It should have been a sign of things to come. Than the bathrooms that they wouldent fix. Florida has decided that the pier is gonna evenuatly cost more than they are making to run there just gonna start taking away costly aspects of the pier and eventualy shut it down instead of being creative and comming up with different acceptable revinue streams.

I just e-mailed Steve Girardi who wrote the story that was in the Tampa Tribune. I asked if he would follow up on it with a story on how this has happened and how upset we on this forum are. I told him that if he wanted, I could get a group of us together and meet with him to help with information. I'll let you know if he responds. I just think we need some media on this to help. The die may already be cast and it may be too late, but its worth a try. I want the way they went about this exposed and thought maybe he could help.

Well, got a quick response...
John: Thanks for writing. Not sure yet what more we'll be doing with this, or even who might do it. I cover all of Pinellas County for the Tribune, so there's no telling where I might be on any dy. However, I will hold onto this because I have a feeling we'll need to do more. Thanks for sending this. Please feel free to keep me updated whenever you like.
Steven
And then he suggested contacting Frank Seargent, so I guess thats next. I also wrote to Capt Mel about it.
If any of you have any reporter contacts please try and contact them. They need to know how upset we are about this to know that it warrants a story.

Got an answer from capt. Mel...
That's an excellent suggestion John. As you may or may not know, I write for the Tampa Tribune and Florida Fishing Weekly, as well as for my web site, and I will pursue the information on this closure so that I can come up with some more detail on that subject..
Best regards, Capt. Mel Berman

Good work have to fish. Its people like that possible have the skway piers there when i get to move back down there.I hate to say it but i cant wait till my knees get so bad that i can go on disability and move back to florida. The skyway is really the main reason i would want to move back to the suncoast area. With out them i would have to seriously have to look at other florida locations to live out my life.

I would love to see an operating budget for the bridges. It is, by the way a public funded endeavor. I would love to also see their maintanance budget and what REALLY needs to be done in order to make these Piers "SAFE" again. My thoughts would be, tell us what it would cost to repair, then get a Federal grant to do so in the name of Tourism, History, or just plain recreation. Put the bug in the right persons ear and you never know what could happen. As many Fisherman that visit these 2 bridges, we could build a "Trust Fund" specificaly for the bridges from donations and raise a Ton of money.
Just my deflated 2 cents...

pulled this comment from another post...have no idea if its accurate..
"The 50 year service life is based upon ussage as an interstate conveyance. It was designed to handle millions of vehicle (including large trucks) each year. The Skyway fishing pier structure is currently getting 1/1,000,000 the use that it was designed for. When you factor in that the vehicles that are using it are traveling 10 mph or less, the structure shouldn't be wearing out as fast"
Interesting thought. Someone needs to find out about these so called inspection reports and if the same standards should apply to a fishing pier. After all its not like you got semi's doing 65 mph over it all these years.
This horse may be dead, but I for one will keep kicking it.

You may be right Jay, but I believe it was looked at as an easy place to cut the FDOT budget. Maybe the truth will come out.
I wonder.. if its so unsafe to be on, it should be just as unsafe to be under. Are they gonna stop the boaters from going under it? I doubt it. We wouldn't want the bridge to fall on anyone..
