The capacity for Vehicles at the South Side Skyway Pier went down from 200 to 160 and here is why.
It is because of how dirty people are leaving the piers and how over-packed the SS & NS Pier has been and people not following the 6 ft distance rule set by the Federal Government and the State of Florida.
Many Vehicles have been coming in with 5-10 people in one vehicle. Due to the overwhelming amount of people on the Piers, the State of Florida has now came in and lowered the capacity again. Every single Bathroom at the South Pier from Friday through Saturday was beyond gross with feces all over toilets to feces on the floor etc. and this is even after maintenance guys would clean up the previous messes. People would still follow in after the mess was cleaned up and make more disgusting messes. The parents of the children now need to go in with their kids to the bathrooms and watch what their doing.
Because of the State of Florida was only doing 50% capacity due to the Covid-19, you now have to wait until someone leaves to enter the Pier. Many people have been staying overnight at the Piers causing more problems. Many people since they have lost their Jobs & Homes are also staying at the Piers. Many people are now Fishing for food to take home because they do not have any money to buy food to provide for their families.
People are bringing in Food in wrappers and containers & leaving everything where they were and not disposing of their trash. According to the Piers, People needs to Pick up their own Trash & they also need to Social Distance or they will be asked to leave.
Many people are catching Fish and leaving them on the concrete and roadways and not picking them up. It has also been noted that people are leaving the Piers with under-sized Fish such as Snappers and Grouper. And until June 1st, Gag Grouper are out of Season to catch and keep.
There are not enough FWC people around to catch everyone from doing this. And those that get caught will pay a Heavy Fine.
It has been told to Me that the Owner of the Piers will not hesitate to shut the SS & NS Pier if this situation continues.
The State of Florida has ordered the Piers to get the mess under control or they will shut Both Piers down indefinately if the Situation persists.

It's ashame people are scumbags and can't handle a little responsibility. They ruin it for the good people out there just trying to get food for their families or pass time with all the covid stuff going on. Lack of respect for themselves and fellow citizens.

Those of us on the forum are always good about leaving the Piers cleaner than when we arrived and we follow the regs.

Triple the admission cost, add the vehicle charge to every single person in the vehicle. Decrease ticket time from 24 hours to 12 and you can't buy twice in a row so no camping. Hire security or off duty officer to write tickets for people killing fish needlessly or keep illegal fish, trashing or vandalizing the pier. Once things start getting back to normal start loosening the restrictions. I wouldn't mind paying more or having a membership like other parks if it meant better facilities to fish. I haven't been back yet but I hope these people fall over the rail.

I hope they actually enforce the common decency rules like they should have been doing for years. The nastiness of the place has gotten exponentially worse every year. Dead fish, bait, trash, glass bottles, dogs & dog crap. The bathrooms are so bad that I will only pee if I absolutely can't make it to the rest stop. Cant imagine if someone had to squat out there.
The amount of illegal fish being kept should warrant an fwc officer on site and they should be writing tickets & confiscating gear. The number of tickets they could write would easily pay for their salary. I'd even pay an extra buck to help fund having an officer.
Between the disgusting conditions and cars going 30 mph, I've found myself going there less & less.

I don't work a 9-5 M-F so I will only fish weekday nights and its usually not bad. Last time I went on a weekend I couldn't park and most of the people weren't even fishing they were just hanging out with their group drinking or smoking weed(Not that I care if you are responsible and respectful.) I pee over the rail all the time, I will not leave my gear unattended. Bring disinfectant wipes and wipe the seat before you sit if you have to poop, or try to chum it through the rod holders(drain holes) lmao. Let me know if you catch more fish.

People are jerks everywhere. I have seen gloves and masks discarded on the ground and left in shopping carts in the WalMart parking lot where I work and in a local Publix parking lot. We have trash cans at every cart return @ Walmart but many people leave their carts wherever they choose. People do not get it. They have their rights but need to keep in mind others have rights too.
Seabird and I always walk the Piers to check for left behind stuff and we pick up the discarded trash and put it in the trash cans. We sometimes find some good stuff left behind. We have found hooks, weights, sissors,a knife, bait and various other items.
Re people keeping undersized and or out of season fish try to find out if they are visitors or locals and educate them if they are visitors. Visitors will most be likely acceptable to learning the rules and regs. Many locals will play dumb re the regs and they should be reported. Seabird and I have witnessed that @ Ft DeSoto last year. I have the FWC violation # in my speed dial on my cell phone. Please report violators and keep yourself safe when reporting the violators Everyone needs to follow the rules on the Piers re no alcohol, picking up after yourself and the fishing regs. Violating the rules by the jerks could ruin it for all.

Now that I've voiced my voice in anger at the slobs who are wrecking my spot, what can we do to get rid of those who are messing up our "Fishin' Hole". Is there any one on the pier that we can call? Taking up talking to the doers of the deeds is Dangerous in these days. Is there any phone number for someone on the pier to come out? I know the least we can do is pick up there crap!!

727-217-8820- Florida highway patrol non emergency out of the Pinellas Park barracks.
888-404-FWCC (3922) Cell phone users can use *FWC or #FWC to report violations - you could be rewarded for reporting violations.
727-865-0668 number for the pier.
I hope this helps a bit.

Amother idea as mackerelman mentioned 5 to 10 people coming in per car. Limit the number of people per vehicle to 2 or 3. And keep same limit on number of vehicles. Having a deputy out there to monitor would be good as well.

I feel the situation at the Piers is only temporary due to the Covid-19 Outbreak. As for the trash like Mackeralsnatcher said, this has been going on for years. This is not totally true. I like a few others here on Proboards, use to Fish the Piers when it was US-19 and hardly no one left trash out on the Bridge. Even after the Bridge went down in 1980 before it became the NS & SS Fishing Piers, We All kept our Fishing Site clean. In My opinion, it was after the bridge legally became the NS & SS Fishing Piers when this crap started. I guess many people started thinking if I pay to Fish then the management can pick up the trash. The Bad Part of all of this, People today has No Respect for others any more. Until this Virus Crap is over, We may all have to help together and keep our Fishing Pier clean. Everytime I go out there I usually clean up My proposed area & discard the Trash. I have also picked up a lot of useful Fishing Tackle that people out there have left. I am waiting to Find a Nice Fishing Rod & Reel.

When I go alone, I do the same. We realize the piers only have limited staff. I usually find terminal tackle there as well and I search for such. I have not forgotten my lessons I learned in Boy Scouts...leave the campsite in better shape than you found it.

I posted 2 weeks ago, they made me wait as they were "counting cars". I was good w it, then the old man from overnite left and they let every f###ing car in to a point where I don't think there was room for 10 cars on the whole pier, it tripled from when I came in. law enforcement and pier patrols are needed. I'm really disgusted with the pier and the pigs that visit it. I pick up garbage EVERY time I go there. It's everywhere, I'm not being racist but I honestly think it's non Americans doing it. I work in the trades, I'v been in some Mexican homes. I think in 3rd world countries it's the norm not to pick up after themselves. They don't own property and have no respect for others.

I work in the trades, I'v been in some Mexican homes. I think in 3rd world countries it's the norm not to pick up after themselves. They don't own property and have no respect for others. As an immigrant I can tell you, most of my family thinks Americans are nasty, filthy homes. My redneck neighbor has a loose parrot with chit every where, I mean every where. I have millionaire clients with the messiest homes ever. One had so much dog piss everywhere, my employees would argue who goes to his house. Makes you gag, and kids blankets were all over the piss. Not trying to start a war here, but just saying filthy people live in every part of the world. But if you want to be stereotypical, well, redneck home or Mexican home, not much difference. And by the way, the bait left to die, the chopped up lizard fish and ladyfish left on the pier to stink up the place, I only see rednecks doing that. Now I'm not Mexican. I'm proud American, born in Europe, so I'm not taking your Mexican comment personally, just saying. In my observations its good old American rednecks making most of that mess. And by the way, I grew up in a European village more redneck then Appalachia. As a kid, cold water out of the well had to be heated up to bath in. And even had an open pig manure "pool". Heck, I remember riding our horse pulled wagon to sell potatoes at the market, monthly coal delivery to cook with, eating rabbit poop thinking its candy, our outhouse without any blue chemicals just plenty of bugs to keep me company, wiping my but with stinging mettle when out in the field with grandpa, he thought it was funny so said nothing. Anyway, to all you rednecks, don't take my earlier comments personally. Got you beat. Although I never ate a coon, but sure would. Grilled please.

Well stated phishead,It's not just a particular group,It's too easy to categorize people in to one label,People need to be more responsible for their own actions,I think the regulars should start reporting these violators instead of looking the other way, with enough complaints it will help make a better experience for all of us fishing there.

I think it's more of an "entitled" thinking crowd not just race, there's dirty folks everywhere. I was raised to clean up after myself and when fishing to leave my spot cleaner than when I got there. Some people are used to having others clean up after them or didn't have an upbringing that values fishing for what it is. Honestly it's a shame and it's only getting worse with the coming generations. Guiding my kids now to do the right thing and hopefully it sticks.

I will have to admit, the feelings and thoughts expressed by yankeeredneck, I too have had and still do have on many occasions, but then reason takes over. I certainly don't want to preach. Just wanted to point out who I think makes a ton of that mess on the pier.

I meant no offense to anyone, I should not generalize as to race. I grew up in the swamps of Ms as a child till I was 13 then NY most of my adult life. I kind of agree with phishead. There are definitely some local, good ole boys contributing to the mess and prob yankees as well. Some people just have no respect for themselves, there homes or others. For that matter, there are a lot of people on this website that REALLY do not care for the Asian community. I totally don't agree with them. I studied martial arts for several years and even took private lessons with one Korean teacher. Used to skip classes sometimes and rockfish in Va instead. It's there way of life and most are are very good fisherman and good people. No easy fix here, limit admittance and enforce cleaning. I have to think a GREAT DEAL of the mess is left from our nite fisherman as I come sun up and find fresh guts and garbage all over in the mornings.

Perhaps if the staff member taking money at the entrance put a little effort into explaining to all patrons to be sure and clean up before they leave as the pier is having problems with litter and dirty bathroom which will result in higher fees, maybe some people will change their ways. Signs on the pier reminding people to not litter? I prefer throwing the guilty over the side but that would only create a new problem of litter in the bay.

Oh, and the guy delivering shrimp to the bait shop, he needs to take a chill pill, nearly ran me over a while back, literally did not slow down as I was crossing and then he told me it was my fault that he has the right of way? Was ready to get out of his truck to kick my azz when I expressed a different opinion, uh, pedestrians have the right of way in crossing...not trucks, he seems like a big piece of trash that should be disposed of!

Here's an idea. How about we all clean up where we fish so that the next guy has a clean spot. As a matter of fact while waiting for the tide to change, expand your cleaning area, just a bit. Who knows what goodies you could be going home with. That's what I'm going to do. Who's with me?

I lean toward there needing to be an FWC presence on the piers. Otherwise people will just do as they please. When I was younger here in Polk County, we had various swimming holes at local lakes. Every one got closer down for the same reason. People just trash wherever they go.
