I'll usually work a pile 20-30 minutes
before moving on, sometimes revisiting
the same pile later at a diferent stage of
the tide.
If I dont get bit in that time, I'm out.
The key is a. Pre catch your bait
on a previous tide, and cull out a dozen or
so extra large ones.
Pigfish, Small Jacks and Runners, Sqirrellfish,
Legal Snapper, Bluefish, Ladyfish- you name
it will all work equally well.
My favorite bait is a big ole wild Pinner
6-8 inches long.
I purposly do not use smaller baits
if I can help it to cut down on wasted
fishing time releasing shorts.
The time between bites will increase,
and you wont get as many bites but
when you do get bit its usually a gaffer.
b. stay mobile!
it should be you, your rod, and a couple
spare baits in a small bucket by the
rail. Nothing else.
Leave your stuff in da truck.
Keep moving, keep trying.
Most of the bites will come either
on the drift out, or as you walk
you bait up and down-in and out.
Standing in one spot, continuously
covering the same ground is like
playing the slots.
You can dramatically increase your
odds if you keep moving.
How long between bites depends
on several factors.
I've had days, weeks, even months
go by I didnt get a keeper.
But good things come to those
who bait. (B I G)
on average 20-30 minutes is as long as I will
give em though.
c. One Man-One Rod
the question you have to ask yourself
is how bad do you want it?
it's always amazed me how folks
are willing to stand out there and fish
for God knows what for hours at a time,
but when you hand em a Grouper stick
the first thing they wanna do is put
the clicker on, lay the dam thing down
and go back to "fishing".
(it not only amazes me, it kind of pisses
me off) lol
Countless time Ive seen folks bowed
up in a rock, fighting for all their life
to no avail because of this googanry.
If you really are serious about catching
a keeper Gag Grouper at the Skyway
Pier, the first thing you need to do is
break camp, put all that fng gear back
in the car, get your Grouper set up
and fish.
Hours upon hours of doing it the wrong
way became perfectly clear to me
when I figured out how to do it
the right way.
Think about all the fancy gear, and all
the fancy camping stuff you see out there.
No fish π
d.things you do need:
I keep a small bridge gaff with enough
light nylon chord to reach the water
looped on a key chain clip to my belt loop.
i carry plyers/cutters in my pocket,
along with spare hooks (9-10/0 Gamkatsu
or Owner Octopus)
and spare leader.
thats is it. period.
off course my rod/reel (1) and a couple of
spare baits in a small bucket.
Everything else stays in the truck-locked
up.
Ya gotta walk the mile- if ya wanna smile
the smile.
e. pre catch your bait!
another practice that I find irritating as hell
is the guy who stands there catching
bait, while his baited grouper rod
lays on the deck or in a fancy pole
holder he so handily fashioned himself
and proudly displays for others to see
waiting patiently for the grouper to
rock him up π
one man one rod folks.
you only have a split second to react.
that fish is gonna hit you so hard
it might break your arm.
YOU GOTTA BE READY!
crank! dont yank!
and dont please just dont
run out in the street like an idiot
and get hit by a car!π³
get yourself a quality aireatior or
pump and build a dam livewell.
take your 1 bait rod and go to
where the bait is most plentiful
and catch bait.
THEN put your one bait rod back
in the dam truck and get you Grouper
rod and go Grouper fishing.
Its fishing not camping.
oh and by the way for the guy who
gonna ask what about Sardines and
Greenback?
All I have to say is have fun with
the shorties if thats what youre
into.
just remember every second you
waste hauling twenty inchers up,
hi fiving, taking pictures and other
googanry activities is valuble time
deducted from a limited window
of the tide phase you could have
been soaking a quality bait
in search of Gagzilla.
Because believe you me-he's out there!
fish on people
i'm out.
