I just started targeting sheephead myself... The bait of choice is either fiddler crab or mud crab. Be careful of using stone crab. They look just like the mud crab. The key different is stone crab have stripe or band on their legs. I use the smallest hook I can get away with.. 4-1 size. Lightest weight that I can get away with and keep it next to the pilling. I like fishing the eddy behind the pilling. Sometime it's better to fish the rocks... hint hint. Too many spearfisherman just slam that small bridge. I'll be in the East coast trying for pompano in the surf.

im not quite sure man, im till a newby to fishing fl. but i fish south almost always , main reason is an old man named hal, told me the water was deeper on south and more pilings , now if thats really true im not sure. but for grouper i think that makes it better but im no expert.i waiting to hear some kingfish and bonita reports getting my tackle ready .

I think the st pete pier is still open for fishing. Iaalways had good luck with the sheeps out there. Either on the board walk in the back casting under the pier or on the right of the pier on that board walk at the end of it under the pier. Trick is to chum. I had a like ten foot pipe I got at Lowe's for a few bucks or crush oysters but those go quick

Both pier have sheepheads. Usually the more pilling u see the more sheepshead is around.
If u don't see them does not mean they r not around. I caught most of my sheepshead not seeing them.
As far as SSP being deeper than nsp, I don't think it's true. Nsp is deeper at the end if I remember correctly. There r more rocks to fish for grouper on ssp so therefore catching group is better on SSP.

hey guys...went out yesterday; I hit the North side after visiting my Dad in Largo. Spots were biting like crazy, I managed one trout. I threw it back. I only saw two keepers being put into a cooler. They were nice trout. Other than that, it was a great day to be out. Heading down to AMI right after this post, going to try the city pier...tight lines brothers...
Bait: Live & frozen shrimp / squid fished bottom rigs and a split shot (#4) and let it fall with both baits used a new rod with the factory 8# test.....

So, nothing on the SSP. Drove over to the north and found a nice little area. No keepers, nice to feel fish on the line. Little black sea bass and spots. Middle restroom, cut squid casting out about 30 yds away from bridge. Did not catch anything dropping lines straight down, is there a sand bar or reef out toward the area I was casting? Wondering why they are holding up out there? Thanks.

Hi everyone, hope you are staying warm. Question, what is considered the approach section of either pier? Is it just past the toll booths? Thanks.
