www.baynews9.com/content/36/2008/8/21/375518.htmlPart of Skyway Fishing Pier State Park to close Thursday, August 21, 2008 Post a comment | E-mail this story | Print PINELLAS COUNTY -- The Florida Department of Transportation and Florida Department of Environmental Protection have announced that they will close the eastern portions of the fishing piers of the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park. The agencies issued this statement Thursday: The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) are working together to continue the operation of the western piers of the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park. In order to maintain public safety, FDOT and FDEP will close the eastern portions of the fishing piers which were built in 1954 and can no longer be safely maintained. Photos of What Will Close (PDF files) * North pier * South pier Both agencies believe that this is the best decision to protect the community's safety while allowing for continued recreational enjoyment. We are committed to working with the community to ensure this local recreational asset will continue to serve the needs of residents and visitors in the area." Background & frequently asked questions When the new Sunshine Skyway Bridge was built over Tampa Bay in 1987, connecting St. Petersburg with Manatee County, the old bridges were opened as the Skyway Fishing Pier State Park. The Skyway Fishing Pier State Park consists of two piers, north and south, that stretch into Tampa Bay. Each north and south pier consists of two former bridges that are joined for vehicular and pedestrian convenience. In 1994, FDEP entered into a 20-year lease with FDOT to manage the piers as a recreational site. 1. Why are the east sides of the Skyway Fishing Piers closing? The east sides of both piers were constructed in 1954. Over the last 50 years, typical deterioration and saltwater corrosion have lead to the end of the service life of the east sides of the piers. To maintain public safety, it is necessary to close the eastern fishing piers beginning August 29, 2008. 2. Who is responsible for the maintenance of the pier structures and pier operations? FDOT is responsible for maintaining the structural elements of the fishing piers from the bottom surface of the deck (pier surface) down. FDEP's Division of Recreation and Parks is responsible for operations from the bottom of the deck up. 3. Why are the eastern piers closing on August 29? To maintain public safety, engineers at FDOT have indicated that it is necessary to restrict heavy vehicular and pedestrian traffic prior to the Labor Day holiday weekend when heavy visitation is predicted. Engineering evaluation of the pier structures warrants this closure for maintaining public safety. The eastern piers are part of the original Sunshine Skyway Bridge and are composed of structural concrete beams designed and constructed with early 1950s technology. After more than 50 years of exposure to extremely corrosive conditions, these piers have exceeded their design service life and can no longer benefit from short- or long-term maintenance. FDOT has conducted extensive inspection and engineering evaluations that show it is not practical to spend significant taxpayer's money on these structures. 4. What is the life span of the west sides of the piers? The west sides were constructed in 1971 and have not yet reached the end of their service life which is expected to be in the 50-year range. However, costly maintenance and replacement needs will need to be evaluated. 5. Will visitors still be able to park on the fishing pier? Construction will begin on August 21, 2008 to modify the western piers to allow two-way traffic and one lane of parallel parking. The buildings and crossovers that were built in the early 1990s are safe and will remain open to the public. It is anticipated that approximately 300 parking spaces will be provided on the western piers. 6. How will visitors get to the fishing piers once the east sides have been closed? Cars as well as light trucks with no trailers will be able to drive on the west sides of the piers and turn around at the crossovers. However, large trucks and RVs will not be permitted on the piers due to traffic pattern limitations but parking will be available near the piers for larger vehicles. Staff will be on site to provide assistance to visitors during the construction. 7. Will the fishing piers still be open 24 hours a day? Yes. The western fishing piers will remain open 24 hours a day. 8. Will emergency response vehicles be able to access the piers? Yes. Emergency response vehicles will be able to access the piers.

I would think that its still safe enough to allow foot traffic on the east side, even if you have to park on the west. If not, then demolish the east side . I don't think any one would have trouble finding stucture then. Come to think of it, if they did it for the NSP, then they would finally have structure on the west side.
Can you imagine what its going to be like on weekends?

Well it seems as if the western side of the piers only have about 12 yrs left of life span. Mabey less with the increased usage and weight . That really blows!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any Idea if the Eastbound side will be demolished? At least that would make homes for some grouper & such... If not, that could make for some hard incoming tide fishing without several Oz's of lead..

"Construction will begin on August 21, 2008 to modify the western piers to allow two-way traffic and one lane of parallel parking. "
Anybody out there today, if so I would be curious to know how they are gonna get 2 lanes and a parallel parking space in that amount of space. Something doesn't make sense, unless they remove some curbs on one side or the other.

I AM FEED UP AND I AM NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANYMORE> It is time for action. Time for all us pier rats to stand up and fight. Contact your local Representative . Call Them Email them. Call all the numbers below. This is not right. First the east side, then they will move the baithouse to the where you pay to get on and close half the pier. Would not be surprised if boaters are behind this. More easy bait for them. We Taxpayers have rights too. If they can spend millions on a bridge to nowhere I sure they can find money to keep the piers opening for fishing. They just need to be reminded. I was think how are they gonna have essentially 3 lanes on 1 spane. I see a nightmare out there. They will probably have to make a parking lot on land and make everbody walk out there .

There are plenty of 50 year old bridges still operating in this country. I believe this is a question of $$$$. They just cut the maintainence cost in half.

From the baynews9 article
"FDOT has conducted extensive inspection and engineering evaluations that show it is not practical to spend significant taxpayer's money on these structures."
I don't believe that FDOT can make this decision, but they can make the recommendation. So it seems they sold their case.
"Cars as well as light trucks with no trailers will be able to drive on the west sides of the piers and turn around at the crossovers"
This will hurt Scooter and other pinfish trappers.

First I agree with havetofish, if they are concerned with the weight of vehicle traffic, why don't they leave it open to foot traffic by installing some crossovers between the spans?
Man is the NSP gonna be crowded now? Heck this is even going to crowd the SSP... So much for the kids wandering around while waiting for the fish to bite. (not that I let my kids wander everywhere, but it was real nice that the SSP wasn't crowded)
Well... we can all write our reps, but this sure came into the public light with short notice on the closing. Don;t know how much of a difference we can make, but it's worth a try. I was taken by surprise when I saw it. Are they going to let it stand, or drop it over to make a new artificial reef? Hmmm...... heck just make the repairs we all want and let her open!!!
Happy (but close quarters) Fishing
I'm all for a saving the piers decal, I'll slap one on my Jeep in a heartbeat (that's good for 500+ miles of public viewing a week up and down 19)

Can't say I'm suprised with all the budget cuts and funding short falls the state put itself in. To bad it's us who have to pay the price. 3 lanes is a doable thing, the bridge is 40' wide, a typical lane is 12', 9' for parking if they follow the regulations we'll stll have 3' either side of traffic and parking to fish. Gonna have to be careful casting or the memory of weight smashed winsheilds will return. And heres a thought, if they cut down on how much room we have to fish they ought to ban crabbing all together. Sad day indeed

Yeah Tuna, We find out about this today and at the same time they are already re-doing the west pier lanes. A well timed plan that is probably too late to change.
Tommy, Using your numbers that leaves 3 1/2 feet on each side. Open a car door and that leaves no room on that side.
Bigger question, is how do you fish the rockpiles on the SSP bay side with the east side pier still in place? I do not believe they will demolish the east side pier (Expense plus chance of greater damage to the west side). If thats the case then after a month the grouper in those rockpiles will be prime target for those with a boat.
Another issue is the turn arounds. Maybe I am missing something but, if you can drive across to the east side for turn arounds, is that not driving on the unsafe part of the pier?
Still alot to find out, I guess. I just believe at this point it was done by the state to save money on maintainence.
Meanwhile I will just stay upset and e-mail some representatives about this decision.

Here ya go Skyjay, it's from Wikipedia so more research need to be done to make sure the facts a right>>>> Second part sounds like what we need to do to save it.
It was devised and constructed by George "Dad" Gandy, a Philadelphia contractor who had also built a theatre in St. Petersburg. Construction began in September 1922 and the bridge was completed in November 1924. The bridge was concrete and spanned a distance of two and a half miles, making it the longest automobile toll bridge in the world at that time. Its drawbridge had a clearance span of 75 feet (23 m). It cost 3 million U.S. dollars to construct. The original toll to cross the bridge was $.75 for an automobile and driver and $.10 for additional passengers.
The bridge reduced the distance between Tampa and St. Petersburg from 43 to 19 miles (31 km). Its location enabled travel by auto along the route of the world's first scheduled airline flight, which operated between Tampa and Saint Petersburg for six months in 1914.
The Gandy Bridge opened on November 20, 1924[4][5]Sixteen visiting state governors and several foreign dignitaries attended the opening ceremony. During George Gandy's speech, he stated; "The bridge is built!" [6]
[edit] Second Gandy Bridge
The original Gandy Bridge was replaced in 1956 with a slightly higher, fixed span. The second bridge remained in use until February 1997 and its future quickly went up in the air. FDOT deemed the bridge structurally deficient to vehicular traffic (years before) unless costly repairs were made. FDOT initially planned to demolish the middle section of the bridge (including the hump) and leave the remaining fishing pier segments intact. The demolished segments would have then been used for an artifcial reef. When residents and community groups of both Pinellas and Hillsborough Counties lobbied together against FDOT and the governments of the two counties to save the 1956 bridge, FDOT dropped its demolition plan. After two years of hearings and funding issues, the 1956 bridge reopened to pedestrian and bicycle traffic on December 11, 1999 as the Friendship Trail Bridge.

I thought Jay took that rather well. It sucks, and I said it before, the more you give up the more they will take. If they would make that section like the Gandy, with pedestrian and bikes only, I have my hunting bike, a little cart on the back for cooler and gear and I still would be a happy camper. Perhaps some sugestions to our Reps in a constructive way would go further in our favor than our complaints. It sounds like a done deal, now we need to make the best of it. Imagine all that pier with only the die hards to fish it. Wouldn't be long till the limits would be coming over the rail. IMHO

I just heard about this from a colleague at work and totally thought he was pulling my leg. Had to come on here and check for myself. Have to say its very suprising. Seems like the government is real good about conducting studies and then saving them until the time is right. I mean give me a freaking break. Construction is due to start August 29th (6 days from now) and this topic is just being released to the public on the 22nd of August.
Its real simple. In my humble opinion the government is doing all they can to avoid the protests and what not like they encountered with the Gandy Bridge. Well yanno what...I for one would like to extend the collective middle finger to all those lazy ass policitician we have in Washington and Tallahassee who put self before community instead of the other way around.
Gents its time to get on the horn with those representatives that are supposed to be (Representing US!!! the common people).
Some friendly suggestions to the Pier Staff and to us local fisherman as a collective whole.
1. Petition (Signatures to save the pier as a historic landmark - hell its the worlds longest fishing pier).
2. Pester the crap out of your representative....start cranking up those printers, emails, etc...
3. Petition could lead to referendum.
Idea for fundraisers if it gets there (Beneficial fishing tournaments? (boaters use the pier too, no pier = no bait), public funding, federal funding (parks and recreation)).
The property tax issue is a state issue not a federal one. They find money for everything else so its obviously there somewhere.
(Sorry my American govt is a little rusty) but if a man believes in saving something...well then its up to us...the beneficiaries to get on the horn and kick some collective ass (not physically...although right now i wouldnt mind it).
The skyway has become my place to relax....bs...and just forget the doldrums of my daily life. Id hate to see it go. I mean who wants to drive from Tampa to fish in Sarasota only to find there isnt any room anymore, NOT THIS GUY.
First public access boat ramps start to disappear, then public marinas, now public fishing piers? This country is becoming more about the rich becoming richer rather than Liberty, and Justice for all. Hell u cant pursue happiness when the government takes actions to screw you out of it. And any more the laws protect criminals more than they do the common man.
How come ever time we have Bush in office this country goes to crap? Sorry...off topic...but damn...Circle the wagons boys...lets get this thing done.

what a bummer , why just drive the east side and park on the west side. and open the east side to foot traffic only, i'm sure that the people on the east side fishing won't make the bridge fall into the bay. when they get the west side done what a mess it will be, with two lanes of traffic, might have to pull over to let somebody by if comin g the oposite direction that you are going . keep it open untill it's time it's unsafe for traffic. just because it says 50 yrs is the time table , keep on checking to make sure it's safe to drive on. newyorker1

Has anyone else tied this to the dolphin lovers and their surveys the past few months? Less area to fish, fewer dolphins will be hooked, injured, be damaged by their dependence on mans handouts. I agree they ultimately want to shut the whole thing down- state wants to save $, huggers want to save dolphins. No proof but the surveys right before this comes down seem a little too convenient to be coincidental.

Well...the piers are going to be losing a lot of business due to the fact that there won't be enough space, and the construction commotion has to have some sort of effect on the fishing. They either need to leave the piers alone or build an equivalent near the piers we have now. I'm hoping that they'll just leave it alone. Most of these bridges around the skyway you can't fish unless you have a boat ( the Dick Meisner Bridge and the small bridge between DMeisner and NSP).

Are they going to build the side again? If not then the whole pier will be closed soon. Bye Bye skyway.

My Head Hurts from all the reading =?
but to be honest this sucks big time! Funny thing is i've never seen 1 DOT vechicle out on or around the piers so now they can tell higher ups that our bridge is not safe! Balogna! What do i know about bridge engineering anyways?
