Went to Ft. DeSoto between 130pm and 430pm, very windy but tide was coming in all afternoon. Not many fishermen. Almost all had poor luck. However...
I used only the CC spoon and had one of the better days in a long time. Landed 4 macks...16.5, 15, 14 and 13 inches. Also released a 17 inch King mackerel. I could easily tell the difference between that and spanish. I also caught a few pinfish, a lizard fish and tiny pigfish.
People were asking me what I was using. Told them spoons. Two guys then used squid spoons and they each caught 1, but barely legal.
Glad I went out. Can see the point that parkpass makes about windy days often being good. Noted that there were high wind warnings for the skyway.

I hope to post pictures of the king and the Spanish later to show some people the difference. MM and tears have written about this and their guidance helped me about how to discern.

The top photo is the baby king. The coloration and spots are more dull. The mack has a pronounced black dorsal fin. The king is more compressed in body shape. Noticed the king quivered when landed vs a mack. Both fish almost same length.

Usually when they don't stop moving when you first land it.. then I would check those. It's most likely a king when it does not stop flopping.

Tears, the king did quiver and shake quite awhile after landing...much more than a typical spanish mackerel.
