Hey guys, I’m a student at USF so I’ve been fishing the skyway for the past few months a decent amount. I’ve never fished around this time and my dad is down here for a few days so I’m hoping to catch some fish with him. Any suggestions on how it’ll be these few days?

If the schools of silver trout come in they are very tasty and average around 12". Very fun to catch and hot same lures as mackerel as well as shrimp and bait tipped sabiki

If you have the time i would suggest a drive over to sebastian inlet. I fish there every few months for a few days at a time. Black drum, redfish, snook, sheepshead, flounder, pompano, mackerel and blue fish is what you can expect to catch right now.

We fished bean point today and only got 1 ladyfish. Went to a pier on AMI and just got a lizard each. Heading to another inlet shortly and will be at the skyway tomorrow.

I’m done with the pier till spring. Maybe. If I do go. It’s sheep’s and flounder. Try throwing cut bait or shrimp between the rock piles.

I’ve heard about people catching smaller grouper with greenbacks. Do they need to be live?

Are fishing for fun or dinner. If fun only then I would hit the shallows around the grass areas and target trout and redfish. Around the rocks along shore for snook. There are so many good areas all around skyway bridge. Large live shrimp on popping cork or soft plastics. Skyway can still be fun for sheepshead.

Ft Desoto has some good areas too and you have both piers.

Wind is killing the fishing right now. Fish areas that are protected from the wind for the most action. A few flounder are starting to show up but not a lot yet. Try the passes/inlets near drop offs, maybe on the beach too. Live bull minnows might help avoid some of the puffers. Sheepshead on the smaller bridges, jetties & rocks. Trout, snook & reds are still around if you want to do catch & release. Lots of 20-24" snook in grass staying warm. You might try the power plant area too.

Ballast point pier Picnic Isl pier And St pete side of Gandy, during low tide you can walk on to the first bridge pilling and target sheeps. I've seen school of trout swim by

been eatin em for 40 years no problem. poor mans lobster so these are the toadies? the ones around every dock/seawall that are worse than pins and destroy every plastic bait in winter? any tricks on keeping/cleaning them? throw them on ice like anything else? cut the top, peel them out, and avoid the guts? I've been tempted but no one seemed to ever be able to give a positive ID on them and actual toxic fish are no joke. Might be time to get out the panfish gear.

aww cmon Seabird wheres yer sense of adventure buddy? of all people given your love of hardhead catfish was the last one id have expected to pass. granted, those little babies you all catch dont yield alot. But thd larger nearshore/offshore models actually add up pretty quick. only takes a few. Like I said, poor mans lobster. try em broiled with lemon and garlic butter.... fricken delicacy!
