I live in Raleigh, NC and fished the NSP and SSP in February of 2019. The Skyway Piers will forever be holy grounds for me! I had a perfect vacation (horse racing track, aquarium, disc golfing, casino, the food and drink, etc.). Whenever I visit again, I'll dedicate more time to fishing and hopefully add to my species list
Speaking of my species list . . .
Early in 2019, I decided on a bucketlist item: catch 100 species of fish
A few buddies suggested I change it to 100 species of freshwater fish and 100 species of saltwater fish. Nope. Let me catch 100 species first, then I’ll consider what’s next
The counting starts in 2019, so any prior catches don't count. And the species listed are on the day or trip of the first catch, so a trophy black crappie (species 1) in 2020 is cool and all, but the evidence will be from February 18, 2019
Here are my species, the location in NC (other than the Skyway), and date
1. Black Crappie - Raleigh, NC 02/18/19
2. Black Sea Bass - Northern Skyway Pier 02/27/19
3. Blacktip Shark – Northern Skyway Pier 02/27/19
4. Speckled Trout - Northern Skyway Pier 02/27/19
5. Spanish Mackeral – Southern Skyway Pier 02/28/19
6. Bluegill – Raleigh 03/02/19
7. Hickory Shad – Neuse River 03/17/19
8. Largemouth Bass – Eno River 03/24/19
9. Channel Catfish – Raleigh 03/27/19
10. Northern Puffer Fish – Atlantic Beach 03/30/19
11. Silver Perch – Emerald Isle 05/04/19
12. Bluefish – Emerald Isle 05/04/19
13. White Perch – Falls Lake 05/25/19
14. White Bass – Jordan Lake 06/09/19
15. Bullhead Catfish – Raleigh 07/12/19
16. Atlantic Thread Herring – Holden Beach 07/17/19
17. Pinfish – Holden Beach 07/17/19
18. Redbreast Sunfish – Raleigh 07/24/19
19. Mummichog – Bay River 08/27/19
20. Mosquitofish – Bay River 08/27/19
21. Red Drum – Bay River 08/28/19
22. Ladyfish – Atlantic Beach 10/05/19
23. White Crappie – Raleigh 11/27/19
24. Common Carp – Raleigh 12/15/19
I’ve got a few species in my sights for next year and plan to take two fishing trips to the NC mountains. Tight lines to everyone in 2020!

Interesting goal. Might be good to count the 24 you already caught, as some maybe hard to catch. I have had a goal to catch 14 or more varieties in one day. Previous number was 13...not salt water but from the Wisconsin river many years ago.

Unfortunately, my time on the Skyway was limited. I was only in Tampa for 2.5 days and it rained the first day and had to shuffle the checkpoints a little. And admittedly, I spent too much time at the horse racing track . . .
Next time, whenever that is, I can focus a bit more on the Skyway rather than running around the area like a maniac. BTW, non-stop flights were about 1.5 hours and bottom line round trip price was $142. It's tempting to make this an every year or every other year trip
There's still plenty of species I missed in 2019 like dogfish, triggerfish, striper, spot, flounder, rays, and skate. Curious to see what else I can check off in 2020 as I start targeting different species

That would be an ideal day of fishing. I’m very jealous, eaglesfanguy Everyone knows (but may not admit) that Florida has the best fishing on the east coast. Cape Hatteras NC definitely gives you a very very very very strong argument given the Labrador and Gulf Stream meeting about 20 miles offshore of NC . . . but c’mon, Florida is where it’s at

Thanks, 50 years in the making! The tiger muskie was a one-off, caught one about 15" ice fishing in PA ~35 years ago. Conger Eel is a one-off as well, caught one about 5' long off Alabama one winter. Fought like a grouper, released it only to find out after I got back home that they are very good eating. Oh well Probably have one or two more misc. little sunfish species that i have caught over the years too.
I think I left off lizardfish!

Nice CarlF ! I edited your list...took off a few....added a few. The Triple Tail and cuda is on my bucket list. If I get further south Id love a cubera snapper also. I lived in Ms, La,Va,Fl and NY. Fished a bit of Canada several times.

The Lake Whitefish (thats what the canooks them) is a chub. By product of casting 3" chart curely tailed grubs for walleyes. Got them in Quebec, not Ontario but I imagine they are all over.

I see one person listed the spot mouth bass or spotted bass or spot, same fish but called one of the above depending on location. Some have caught them but thought they were largemouth. If you've fished in the south you've probably caught some, don't get anywhere near as big as a largemouth

I fished for spotted bass on the Alabama/Coosa/Tallapoosa River system up around Montgomery Al. We caught some real slammers below the dams. It’s like fishing tides: no current, no spotted bass bite.

Fished jones bluff many times, caught some nice striped bass and catfish below the dam. Great crappie fishing in the sloughs too.
