Brought the yak down by Johns pass this morning, was too rough so I shore fished, no luck. By noon it calmed down enough to get out there, so off I went. Choppy at first but it calmed down nicely after awhile. Bite was ok I guess. Only brought home one large whiting and two silver trout, enough for a meal. Released two nice specs, that normally would be slot, maybe 16-17 inches. Caught two ENORMOUS sail cats, biggest I’ve ever seen, they were fun. Both hit large pinfish. Lots of hard heads, hate them! Not much else, one small sea bass and a puffer. Heading back out with Hubbard’s tomorrow, last shot at a keeper Gag.

Did you use shrimp for the trout and Whiting? Johns Pass is one of the better fishing spots along the beaches.

Ya, shrimp for everything but the sailcats. I was inside the bay, over by the park next to the VA, fish were on the edge of the boat channel

If you will clean the sails you will be surprised on the taste/firmness. close to sheephead

Here we go again. And do you know what sailcats eat? Please describe its feeding habits. To all the people that are going to bash the sailcat please provide a link to a research paper describing stomach contents of sailcats. My 35 years of raising millions fish tells me that catfish and most other fish eat the same junk. Generally speaking. I bet pinfish will eat worse stuff then sailcats, and do you know who eats pinfish. Groupers. Now dont tell me pelagic eat only live bait, that’s common sense. But generally speaking most reef fish will eat the same junk. That includes fish poop. Even herbivorous fish. Now if you don’t like the flavor of catfish, that’s a different thing, or cleaning its sucks., Then you have a valid point. But let’s not repeat the same old tales. And do you know what lobsters and crabs eat. Worse stuff then any catfish. But yet we choose to pay insane money for them. And how is flavor. Well it’s in the eyes of the beholder. I can go on for ever describing what most fish eat, but I think with that logic everything would be catch and release. Cause if it ain’t the rummers of chit wolfing catfish then it will be the worms or the mercury, soon something else. Hell might as well start eating meatless burgers. But hold on, veggies, organic fertilizer, and that is ...... or worse inorganics. Darn. Forgot dinoflagellate poisoning. Yup many people die. My hockey coach died eating oysters.

Sailcats are predators, as are most large catfish. Even hardheads are mainly predators.

Sailcats are predators, as are most large catfish. Even hardheads are mainly predators. Hence they took live pins. All the sailcats I caught were on big shrimp.

If you care to add all the data, it’s 100%. Don’t see the “chit” on that list.

People always give me crap for keeping cats. I eat em, the kids love em and even prefer them over other fish. If more people keep them the less of a nusence they'll be.

Worst part about sailcats is all the slime & pulling the skin off, otherwise, great fighting and great eating fish.

Worst part about sailcats is all the slime & pulling the skin off, otherwise, great fighting and great eating fish. we used to blow em off with a pressure cleaner, go through all at once and clip the side fins off with some cutters so they'd lay flat and then filet the hell out of em. then just cut the meat off the skin like a regular fish. worked pretty good. helluva lot easier for sure

Just cut the meat off the body and remove the skin like any other fish. I like leaving the fins to have something to hold onto.

All valid points. But that whole thing with catfish eating chit is just getting old and annoying. Believe me. Just about every reef fish eats poop.
