Hello all. I am seeing a lot of Penn senator 4/0 reels at garage sales. I don't know if they work. Some come with the rods. Are they reels worth the $40.00 they are asking for? The rods have seen better days reels look good. Thanks for the help

Which 4/0? If they are Senator 113 or 113H, then they are definitely worth more than $40, pretty much indestructible, clean them up, new line and fish them. If the are the Long Beach 4/0s, like a lot of charter boats use, they are still good reels but not worth a lot of money.

Penn Senators are great reels. Almost bullet-proof, lots of replacement parts, and lots of upgrade parts. The Senator 4/0 comes in different models. 113 and 113L2 - black sides, 2.0:1 retrieve ratio, about 18 lbs drag, spool fill of 370 yards of 40 lb mono or 760 yards of 65 lb braid. The 113H and 113H2 - red sides, have a 3.3:1 retrieve ratio. The rest is about the same as the black sides. Both sell new for about $109 and about $45 or more on EBAY depending on the upgrades. With the correct upgrades may be able to achieve 25+ lbs of drag. Mystic has basic and some upgrade parts, Pro Challenger (and others) have upgrade parts. The Alan Tani site has good tutorials for maintenance, repair, and upgrades. Hope this helps.

I have a Penn 113-H & it has easily Hauled in Gag Grouper off the Skyway & on Deep Sea Charters. I have never had that 1st problem with mine. It is spooled with 80lb. test line. I Grease it once a year & I Clean it after every time I Fish with it. And that is what extends the Penn 113-H's life. Treat Your Reels right & they will treat You right.

I’ve had a 113h for many years and it’s never failed. Newer ones come with the ht100 carbon drag washers. I’ve caught grouper offshore no problem.
Also check out the Daiwa 400h. Full metal body and found for around the same price. And the reels I prefer over the penn senators now.

I have 2 Penn 113HLW reels on Penn 7' Slammer rods. I take 1 of them when I go on a party boat because mine are better than the wore out ones they have on the boat and they have worked great. I'm bringing them this May when I come to Anna Maria. I'm planning on trolling for kings with them and bottom fishing the nearshore reefs. They have a wider spool that holds at least 50% more line than the 113H.

Penn senator 4/0 reels last for ever, unlike my fancy HI $ Avets that go thru bearings every season of catching 40/80 lb Halibut

I'm going to hit a yard sale this weekend that's advertising lots of fishing stuff. Kind of hoping for a 4/0 Senator on the cheap.
