Got there and see a person catching some mack at the beginning. We rigged up our white crappie jig. GF toss it into the water and instantly got it bite off before she can reel even LOL. Using 30#. I rigged up and went to work and caught a small one. Then got bite off. Keep working the area a little bite ended up with 3 keeper while around us, the other guy only caught another one.
Not much light left and we wanted to catch some grouper and bait, so we headed to the end. Damn it was packed... so we drove back toward the last bathroom and found an unoccuppied rock pile and park. I looked for bait but they are down deep, so I busted out my sabiki and caught like 3 dozens whitebait. Cut them up and got some small pin and grass grunt. My GF send it out and I freelined mine out.. no action at all. I started walking around to different rockpiles to fish for grouper.. Nothing..
Grab my other rod and throw on a jig head. Cut the bait in half and toss it out to the rock pile and let it drift out slowly with current and slowly drop into water column. Something hit it and ripped my line out, pop the bail back up and started reeling. a nice 12" snapper. I tried again and got another snapper. GF saw and she rigged her rod and put on a fish finder rig. We both worked at it and got our limit within the hour.
After that.. we just went for grouper and couldn't find any home. Slow tide wasn't very good for them. Did saw a few macks being picked off the bottom when I was fishing for grouper.
Yes mack do bite at night and it's a super rare things that happen. The big close to full moon helps too as well.
