Fished only from 115 to 145pm at Sand key piers. Very oppressively humid. Lost perhaps a 30 inch bonnet head but within 10 minutes of that got one that was 22 inches. Had a tug of war with a pelican over the shark. The water was cloudy with a strong incoming tide. Used pieces of squid with a knocker rig.

Sounds like a good trip for such a short time. Do you fish there often and if so what else have you caught there?

It's not far from my place and is good for short outings, which is nice during hot weather. Big variety of fish there, especially grunts, porgies and spottails. The snapper tend to run small. Many snook seen along with sheephead. I use shrimp and squid.

There are 3 short Piers as well as a seawall to the west of the bridge and you have the option to walk around and fish under the bridge and on the intercoastal side to the E of the bridge. There is also a Jetty West of the bridge you can fish from but it is hard to access with all of the rocks you have to traverse.

To fish the 3 Piers and under the bridge to the Intracoastal waterway, when you enter the park turn to your right and follow the sign for the fishing area. There is no fee to use to the fishing piers. You will have to pay to park and use the rest of the park.
You can get an annual pass which is good @ Sand Key,Fort Desoto,The Bellaire Causeway and I think Fred Howard Park. Go to http:www.pinellcounty.org and click on parks and recreation and go from there.

Sand Key Park does have some easy shade you can duck into unlike The Skyway Piers.

Crazy you had a tug of war with a pelican over a bonnethead shark. Glad you at least got one of the sharks. How did it taste?

I cut the shark into steaks after bleeding it. It's in the freezer for a Friday fish dinner. My wife has tilapia in case she doesn't like it but she was real happy with the catch. I ate both bonnet head and blacktip back in December, both were good. I actually caught one other fish just before the sharks hit... a nasty oyster toadfish. As I was trying to get the hook out, the first shark hit...I ran to the rod and fought the fish. During that time one of the birds took the toadfish. Thank you, birds!

Those toadfish make pretty cool aquarium pets.

She said it was the best salt water fish she has had...she has already tried mackeral, snapper, grunts and catfish.

Those toadfish make pretty cool aquarium pets. Their slime is not good. Had a friend who used to work on the Hubbard's boats who got a little slime from a toadfiah in his eye and his vision was messed up in that eye for several days. It eventually cleared up. I think he went to the Dr.

Wait until she tries red or gag grouper or also scamp which is also in the grouper family. I like gag over red grouper and scamp over both. Vermillion and Lane snapper are also very good. I bought a lane snapper from Gulf Wild (Don's Dock) that we had tonight.
