Anyone want to teach a couple people how to fish on the Pier? Let me know what you will charge me to Teach me and a 11 year old. I really only fish fresh water but the 11 year old LOVES fishing so I need someone to show us the right way to pier fish at NIGHT. Of course i want someone that really knows what they are doing and wants to make a few extra bucks.

save the $$$ ........... just buy some cheapish fishing gear for starters. you'll be surprised at how quickly the concrete takes it toll on rods and reals later on when you gain experience and the son matures a bit more you can lash out the more expensive stuff.
Fishermen in general love to talk about their catch... if you see someone getting a good haul. wait till they are not so busy and say hello

On my last trip I broke the rod tip, and scraped up the spool on my shimano rig.

This week the incoming tide will start around 8 pm as will the moonrise. It should be a blast all week. First week of school so it may be tough getting out there in the evening but I will try. I think I will have a business emergency in st Pete on wed evening and it may need follow up Thur evening.

I'd rather deal with high winds, fast tides, rain or whatever else than crowds. However, if it's the only time you can go, it's just another challange to overcome. To me that's the fun part. If fishing was easy, it would get boring fast.

Do they both have bait shops and restrooms?

If you are limited to weekend fishing due to work etc., go early in the am before the crowds move in.

So wind should not be an issue. Crowds everywhere are still in the forecast. But go out either way. You will catch fish and learn something new for next time.

You will catch fish and learn something new for next time. We went Saturday at 900pm and stayed until 200am used shrimp fiddler crab and squid we only caught bait fish BUMMER. Welcome to the club. Don't use squid... they works offshore and sometime work at the pier(seen a guy caught a grouper with it) but there are much better bait to use out there. Learn where the rock pile are and learn how to tie a fishfinder rig. 1-2oz weight. Outgoing tide cast it close to the rock pile and wait for snapper. If incoming, work under your feet next to a piling.

How far do you typically try to cast it out when going to/near the rock piles? 50ft? 100ft? 200 ft? more?
I never feel like I know if I'm far enough out (whether casting or free-lining) unless I get snagged....

I never feel like I know if I'm far enough out (whether casting or free-lining) unless I get snagged.... The Rock Piles start about 60 to 75 feet out & go out about 200 feet. You can approximately see the distance on the Skyway Rock Pile maps. skywaypiers.proboards.com/post/35539/threadSouth Side Pier - North of Bait House is the Best one.

What size hooks and weights did you use. Had 2 OZ on and hooks we all had different from 2/0 to 4/0 Hooks may be too big. I catch snapper with 1/0 and maybe 2/0. I have caught snapper and large grunts using even smaller when trying to catch small pins for bait. 2 oz may also be too big. I hardly ever use 2 oz unless the tide is really ripping. And then it’s a big harder to catch them. 3/4, 1 oz are my most common. I recommend step both down and your luck should improve. What leader material did you use?
