I start out with 3-4 ft and when it gets under 1 ft from retying because it's nicked and frayed near the jig, plug or hook I'll tie on a new one. Everything I fish for has teeth so it's pretty often.

Feel Your Leader every once in a while. If it feels nicked and frayed, Replace it. If You don't You may lose Your next fish.

Feel it after every hit, hook up and caught fish for sure.

If ur using braided line don't forget to eyeball the last 20 or so yards of your line every now and again. The slightest brush up against that concrete can turn your 65lb. Power Pro into 10lb. line.

Every cast. Jk. Just give it a look and feel like others have said. If I get I get a snag and get it out or catch a fish I always check it. If it's got any fray or doesn't look/feel right then I replace it. You don't want to lose a fish because you were too lazy to retie a leader. I've done it more than once.
